2016 MTV VMAs: Kanye West Singles Out Taylor Swift in Bizarre Speech, Then Introduces Strange Video

No rehearsal? No problem! Kanye West didn’t disappoint when he took to the stage at the 2016 MTV VMAs on Sunday, August 28, for the four minutes granted him to do or say anything he wanted.

To the chants of “Yeezy, Yeezy, Yeezy,” the “Famous” rapper, 39, kicked off his moment in the spotlight in proper style.

“I am Kanye West,” he said, pausing frequently to take in the cheers of the audience. “And that feels really good to say, especially this year. I came here to present my new video. But before I do that, I’mma talk.”

“Now, later tonight, ‘Famous’ might lose to Beyoncé, but I can’t be mad. I’m always wishing for Beyoncé to win, so … ,” he continued, before jumping into an explanation of why the now-infamous music video came to be. “For people to understand just how blessed we are, it was an expression of our now, our fame right now, us on the inside of the TV. You know, just to, to put Anna Wintour next to Donald Trump. I mean, I put Ray J in it, bruh! This is fame, bro. Like — I see you, Amber.”

The camera immediately panned to West’s ex-girlfriend Amber Rose, who he has famously feuded on and off with.

“My wife is a G,” West said as his strange speech began to meander. “Not a lot of people’s wives let them say that. We all in the same boat, now we all in the same bed. Well, maybe different boats. Well, if we think about last week, and it was 22 people murdered in Chicago … People say, ‘Oh, but you have that beef with Taylor, but I love all y’all — that’s why I called her. So I was speaking at the audience too last year and one kid came up here and one kid said three of my kids got killed.”

“If you see people dying right next to you, you can start to feel like, What’s the point? I know for me, sometimes I’ll sit down and talk to older, rich people — a.k.a. white — and they tell me, ‘Don’t compare yourself to Steve Jobs and Walt Disney,’ and my people told me, ‘Bruh, bruh,’ they tell me, ‘Don’t compare yourself to those people.’”

“There are three things that keep oppressed people down: taking away their esteem, taking away their resources and taking away their role models,” West continued. “My role models are artists, merchants. Truman, Ford, Hughes, Disney, Jobs, West. Tonight, we are to have fun. I’m standing in front of my idol Puff Daddy. I’m standing in front of my wife, Kim Kardashian West. I’m standing in front of the future, Chance the Rapper. 2 Chainz, Jaden Smith. We are undeniably the influencers, the thought leaders. I‘m gonna play y’all a piece of my art. Enjoy that. Play that.”
