Natalie Portman: "I Didn't Touch Pot Til I Was in My 20s"

She may have made her film debut as a tween, but Natalie Portman wasn't hitting parties or clubs -- or any substances, illegal or otherwise -- despite her early entrance into Hollywood.

In the new issue of Marie Claire, she plays the dork card. "OK, so I didn't really go to any high school parties," Portman says. "And yeah, I didn't touch pot til I was in my 20s."

See Natalie Portman get a makeunder

The actress, 28, caught up on the pleasures of imbibing alcohol once she began attending Harvard University. "I didn't get flat-out drunk until I went to college."

Of her late-blooming ways, she muses: "But I think that's a good thing in many ways."

Her stimulant of choice? Work! "Work was like an all-you-can-eat buffet," she tells the magazine. "And I was like, 'I'm hungry!" I tend to get overambitious with what I can do"

What would Natalie look like with Kate Gosselin's hair?

Portman plays a mother and wife torn between two siblings -- Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal -- in the new drama Brothers.

But she sets her sights on another woman, Mila Kunis, for a love scene in the movie Black Swan. Kunis recently told BlackBook of the encounter:

"It's two girls making out, and guys have a thing for that. And Nat is like every guy's dream. She's a nerd's idea of heaven...The whole thing is silly, but I can see why people care."

She acts as if just because she did not do these things until later it's as if she is acting so proud & cool she did it eventually. If you don't do it, why start! For some reason people think it's COOL to do it instead of not do it. The long ongoing sad idea that you are boring if you don't. I am so glad I never gave in to anyone, I stayed true to myself & never feel like I missed out on anything. I can look back on my life & know I didn't do those things that could have gotten me arrested or a lost trust to my parents. Another thing, those who think not doing drugs is enough, staying clear of people doing it is wise as well because if you get caught just by association, it can really mess up your life. She always comes off as if she is so smart & educated, but I see a stupid person who gave into what other losers were doing.

Oh good grief...it's like saying "yeah, I didn't shoplift until I was in my 30's"- give me a break. You still broke the law and you're still a pothead- what do you want, a medal for waiting until your 20's?

you know why jobs are testing before they hire...cause of horrible insurance companies. Thats the only reason! Its not fair since Marijuana can stay in your fat cells for up to a month...which means you could have stopped a month ago for the job, test and still fail...thats not fair!

Anon You are missing out....ella you dont know what the hell your talking about! Pot is illegal cause of racism and politics, plain and simple. Weed is far safer than tobacco and alcohol. Thats in any study that isnt from the right wing, religiuos freaks. People should be able to do what they want in their own homes. Hemp oil will boost your immune system and kill cancer! Look it up ignorant people!

There are plenty of college kids who experiment with pot while in school. Live and LET LIVE!!!!!! (plus liquor is FAR MORE DANGEROUS THAN POT!)

She also waited until her 20's to start smoking, which got her kicked off the track team at college. She should mention that too since she's so proud of her late blooming activities.

  • December 02, 2009 - 4:27pm It's still illegal

Wow, didn't touch an illegal substance until her 20s. What an upstanding citizen! Give her a medal.

  • December 02, 2009 - 4:21pm bored and annoyed at stupid people!

YOU PEOPLE ARE SUCH PRUDES!!! wake up! SO many kids drink and do drugs and start as young as middle school! Natalie is not saying that it's okay to drink and do drugs as long as you're in your twenties, she simple stated that she did not partake in them until she was in her twenties. and she does not have to be an "example" for kids-she's a 28 year old! they party! they do things kids shouldn't do! Natalie Portman is an amazing actress and you people need to stop judging

There's really nothing at all wrong with smoking pot once you're an adult, As long as you don't let it cause you to do stupid things or lose your ambitions, then I say smoke up. Smoking pot is no worse than drinking alcohol. The only difference is that pot is illegal, but I don't even want to open up that debate.

Please. Why is it an acheivement to have waited until your 20's to do drugs or get drunk? I'm 24, have never touched pot in my life and don't intend to.
