Norman Schwarzkopf, Retired General, Dies at 78

Retired General H. Norman Schwarzkopf died Thursday, Dec. 27, in Tampa, Fla., a U.S. official told the Associated Press. He was 78 years old.

Schwarzkopf, who commanded the U.S.-led forces that helped free Kuwait of Saddam Hussein's occupation during the Gulf War in the early 1990s, was a decorated combat soldier who served in Vietnam before being promoted to General in 1988.

Known popularly as "Stormin' Norman," he retired from active service in 1991, after which time he wrote an autobiography, It Doesn't Take a Hero, and served as a military analyst for NBC. In 1993, he was diagnosed with and treated for prostate cancer.

Prior to his death, Schwarzkopf lived in Tampa, Fla., where he served his last military assignment. He is survived by his three children, Cynthia, Jessica, and Christian.
