This just in: News veteran Sam Donaldson was arrested for a DUI earlier this month – and is still awaiting a court date for failing his sobriety test.
The 78-year-old ABC newsman was spotted driving on the shoulder of Savannah Road in Lewes, Del. Dec. 1, Police Chief Jeff Horvath told radio station Delaware 105.9.
According to Horvath, an officer detected alcohol on Donaldson's breath when he pulled up to the newsman's vehicle, and so proceeded to give him a field sobriety test, which Donaldson failed.
He was immediately arrested for drunk driving and booked at a nearby station, but was "released to an adult pending his appearance in court" shortly afterward.
The incident took place just before 8 p.m., officials report, and he was entirely cooperative.
Donaldson is currently retired from full-time ABC work, but still frequently contributes to several political shows on the network, including This Week.
