Selena Gomez talks about her "really bad breakup," needing a man who's "not threatened" by her, feeling like an "underdog" among other Disney stars, and her feud with Lorde

Let it all out, Selena Gomez! The singer and actress, 21, covers the March 2014 “Power Issue” of Seventeen, and though Justin Bieber‘s ex-girlfriend made headlines when she abruptly cancelled her Australian tour, she tells the magazine she’s feeling stronger than ever.

“This year is when I really started feeling powerful,” says the former Wizards of Waverly Place star, who adds that it wasn’t easy coming up among the likes of Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato on the Disney Channel. “I had always been the underdog secretly. I was on Disney when it was Miley [Cyrus], the Jonas Brothers, and Demi [Lovato]. I questioned the way I looked, acted, sang, and wrote.”

In an obvious dig at ex Bieber, 20, she continues, “Then I turned 20, went through a really bad breakup, and realized I needed to have ‘Come & Get It’ be amazing. I wanted it all to be me. I’m glad it’s taken me this long to get where I am because now I am ready for it.”

Currently single, the “Love You Like a Love Song” crooner explains to the mag what kind of guy she’s looking for nowadays, with some advice a fellow pop star offered. “I actually talked to Katy Perry about guys who are intimidated by strong girls. I haven’t found someone yet who could understand my lifestyle, support it, love me through it, and not be threatened by it,” Gomez says. “It’s hard. I do think I might scare some guys, because I’m like, ‘I want to change the world! I have dreams! What do you want to do?’ But I only know how to be me.”

The Seventeen sitdown also touches upon Gomez’s feud with another precocious star, Lorde, who publicly dissed Gomez in an interview with Rolling Stone.

“I recently did an interview and they asked me who I thought was up-and-coming and making a difference. I said, ‘She doesn’t like me, but Lorde.'” she says of the “Royals” singer, 17.

(Lorde said: “I love pop music on a sonic level, But I’m a feminist and the theme of her song [‘Come & Get It’] is, ‘When you’re ready come and get it from me.’ I’m sick of women being portrayed this way.”)

Said Gomez: “I’m going to support her whether she likes me or not because I think she’s doing great things. Some day I will see her and we’ll be cool.”
