No sugarcoating here! Tom Brady got honest about his talked-about marriage to Gisele Bundchen in a new interview and said that forging and maintaining their “strong” bond has taken a lot of work.
The NFL quarterback, 38, sat down with Access Hollywood at an event on Monday, May 9, where Brady watched a snippet of a separate interview Bundchen had recently conducted with the outlet. In the video, the Brazilian supermodel looks at a red carpet photo of herself with her husband from the Met Gala several years ago and gushes over Brady. “He’s so cute,” she says in the clip.
Brady, grinning as he watched his wife’s reaction, responded: “Awwww, that’s my girl! It was Mother’s Day yesterday.”
The standout athlete then noted that his relationship with his wife, 35, is solid now. “I’m blessed to find this life partner that we all kind of seek at different times in our life,” the New England Patriots player shared. “We found each other at the right time. We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs together, and in so many ways, that’s kind of built our relationship so strong.”
Us Weekly exclusively reported last September that the A-listers hit a rough patch following his Deflategate scandal. “Tom’s become very nasty and irritable and started acting out on her,” a source said of the 2015 Super Bowl MVP at the time. Tensions were so high that Bundchen even threatened her husband with divorce. The two trail Beyoncé and Jay Z in the Forbes ranking of the world’s highest-paid celebrity couples, earning more than $75 million a year.
“We all have our challenges that we face in our life,” Brady noted on Monday. “And it’s great to have that rock that you can always lean on that can support you in different ways that you need to.”
Like her husband, Bundchen also alluded to marital issues in a November 2015 interview. “I think we’ve been through a few tough times together,” the mom of Benjamin, 6, and Vivian, 3, told CBS This Morning last fall. “I think that’s when you know who are your friends and who loves you. My father always said the quality of your life depends on the quality of your relationships, and I think, no matter how challenging it was, we’ve always been supportive of one another. I think that’s the most important thing you can have in life, you know? A support system and love.”
Brady is facing yet another round of Deflategate after a court ruled last month that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell‘s four-game suspension is still to be upheld in the 2016 season.
