While Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are mum about details of their lavish wedding in Paris and Florence on Memorial Day weekend, West has not been shy about his affection toward the city of Florence, especially his Italian designer friend, Ermanno Scervino. The "Stronger" rapper has been studying with Scervino in Florence, calling him an "inspiration." Kardashian, for her part, is a fan as well, stepping out in a number of Scervino designs in the past months -- from her white lace ensemble for her 33rd birthday at Tao in Las Vegas to a custom suede bustier and skirt for shopping on May 21.
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Scervino opens up about his friendship with West and if the future may bring a collaboration between the two.
"Our friendship is based on a deep and immediate mutual understanding. This comes as no surprise, he is a very special person, with a great energy and sensitivity," Scervino tells Us.
West, 36, first met Scervino after visiting his boutique in Paris earlier this year and began studying under his tutelage as part of the designer's workshop. "My plan was to surround myself with the excellence of Italian handcraft and the people working to maintain it alive. This allows me to monitor directly all the various steps of the creative process, from the sketches to the final fittings," Scervino tells Us. "Indirectly, this is also a way to preserve our tradition and know-how. In fact, in my atelier, we have the expertise to work with all ranges of fabrics and materials, from leather to denim, from wool to silk and cashmere, to create sportswear as well as couture pieces."
Their friendship and work relationship stems from a deep root of respect and artistic admiration. "Kanye has nothing to learn from anyone. He just appreciates Ermanno Scervino's genuine Italian handcraft," the designer says. "He is a genuine creative talent with the soul of a true artist."
As for a collaboration between the two in the future? That isn't out of the question. "We've become friends, he has fallen in love with the artistic treasures of Florence," Scervino tells Us. "Who knows what can happen in the future."
For now, Scervino is concentrating on his immediate projects. "I am working on several projects, especially abroad," Scervino tells Us. "Although my focus for now is on an event, which will be in Florence on June 18, during 'Firenze – The Hometown of Fashion' in the occasion of next Pitti fair."
