The Great Katherine Heigl Hair Mystery of 2010 has been solved!

The naturally blonde Heigl told UsMagazine.com why she suddenly went brunette at Thursday's ShoWest Awards at Bally's Las Vegas, where she was honored as Female Star of the Year.

"It's for a role we haven't even begun pre-production on," Heigl, 31, told Us. "It's based on Janet Evanovich's novel One for the Money." The actress will play the role of wisecracking New Jersey detective Stephanie Plum (Author Evanovich's hit series spans 15 books so far.)

"She is a very specific kind of girl, so I just wanted to show the legion of fans that I will be your vision of Stephanie Plum. It's important. I hate when my favorite books are made into films and they are just not what you expect."

PHOTOS: The biggest wardrobe malfunctions of all time

Heigl -- who had a wardrobe malfunction that night when her dress strap broke -- admitted the new 'do took some getting used to. "I was pretty shocked at first...I was like, 'wow, it's dark, that's not just brown, that's black.' It took me a good day and a half to totally embrace it."

Her husband, Josh Kelley, "just freaked out immediately," she added. "That's good at least that the boys like it."

Life as a non-blonde is great, she gushed. "I love it. It's fun. I feel a bit different even though I don't act any different. I say all the same stupid things -- I just look different."

Heigl wouldn't confirm recent reports that she's left her show Grey's Anatomy after a rocky six years.

The actress had taken some time off from the series to bond with Naleigh, her adopted 16-month-old daughter.

I am a bit late on this conversation....but I did email Evanovich to complain at the choice and as you may have guessed, she gave up her movie rights and could not select the actress for SP. Who says Sandra Bullock is too old??? Everytime I have read the series of books, I only envisioned Sandra in the role of Stephanie and maybe Queen Latifa as LuLu. Ranger is another story.....he has GOT to be hot! Hope they don't disappoint us again

Me too, I was bummed to hear that she was cast as Stephanie Plum. Too bad it couldn't be Sandra Bullock, altho she's probably too old for the role. I sure hope KH can handle this part!

It's just the "new" fans of her who only know her from Grey's Anatomy only know her as a blonde, but she was brunette in Roswell too.

  • March 28, 2010 - 11:44pm W.

I've been watching her on TV for years since Roswell, her hair is not naturally blonde, it's brunette and she said so herself in old interviews, just watch old Roswell episodes, you can see her dark roots in almost every episode.

Yipes! Did her boobs get smaller?

its a good colour for her. Some actors just change their hair color and it doesnt work for them, but this works for her.

he is gorgeous in ewither hair color. I think you guys are very jealous of her beauty and fortune. That is a shame. I loved her in Grey's and she is a good actress. I think she has natural beauty and talent. Stop the jealousy most of you would kill for her looks anyday. If not then you are lying...:)

Mel: Finn didn't say that ALL Scandinavians are blonde; s/he said that true blondes can only be Scandinavian. "All poodles are dogs" does not mean "All dogs are poodles." (Please note: I am not necessarily agreeing that what Finn said is TRUE - I'm only saying that you have interpreted it completely backwards.)

Kathrine will do great! Get over youselves guys-- stop being so judgmental. She's a great actress and she'll make it work. Also I like the dark hair-- it's sexy!

  • March 20, 2010 - 1:51pm Mel

To Fin: That is the farthest from the truth. I am 1/4 Norweigian & my hair is a very very dark brown. So can you explain to me why my hair is dark if I'm Scadinavian?

  • March 20, 2010 - 11:34am Cridder

I always imagined Stephanie Plum as a sassy, fiery red head

  • March 20, 2010 - 10:34am Jon

    Interesting! Good for her!

katherine isn't an oscar calliber star so why should she be held to keep the same hair color she had on a hit tv show it's not like it's the film Rachel Rachel in which it's main charecter has dark hair but the actress that plays that charecter was a natural blonde who dyed her hair dark for the part so in certain scenes of the film her natural color shows through the dye job granted that actress was also Oscar nominated for the part so Kat is a different case Totally
