Is Lady Gaga getting a raw deal after donning a meat-inspired dress at Sunday's VMAs in L.A.?

The singer's beefy ensemble (designed by Franc Fernandez) outraged PETA, who complained that the singer "tried once again to shock the world."

PHOTOS: The craziest moments from Sunday's show

"Lately, Lady Gaga has been having a hard time keeping her act 'over the top,'" PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk writes. "Wearing a dress made out cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people who are upset by butchery than who are impressed by it."

Newkirk adds, "Meat is the decomposing flesh of a tormented animal who didn't want to die, and after a few hours under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh it is and likely be crawling in maggots -- not too attractive, really."

But the 24-year-old singer says she didn't intend for her outfit to cause any controversy -- and she's apologizing to fans who may have been offended.

"Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment free human being on the earth," Gaga told Ellen DeGeneres Sunday night after the VMAs. "However, it has many interpretations, but for me this evening, if we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And, I am not a piece of meat."

You're all retarded, that meat was never going to go to starving kids in Africa, it's from a LA butcher and if nobody bought it, it would just turn into beef jerky for some guy playing World of Warcraft to chew on. I'm sure he wouldn't have ordered in anoher cow or something just to give Lady Gaga the flank and rib - the cheapest part of the cow. So maybe you should just not eat anymore and let all your food rot because kids in Africa don't get food so obviously we should make the most of the fact that we do.

Wearing meat or fur for that matter(see this ROBYN NG) is like flaunting the suffering of the animals. Do you know how they get those fur from the animals? They electrocute them short of death and then they skin them alive! Cool huh? Watta sick world!!!!

Why don't you try telling that to the animals that unwillingly died for your shock dress...check out you tube factory farming if you've got the nerve....it is so disgusting and unbelieveable...

that was and will forever be the ugliest dress ever,it is not even a dress.that thing should be put down the garbage disposal,or heavily seasoned and broiled and served to the nearest homeless shelter for people to eat

So you wasted enough food to feed people desperately in need of food in this country so you could get just one more spotlight on yourself. Do what the entertainers in the old days did - just go out and sing or dance or whatever it is you do. We don't care about your causes, your views on how the world should live according to you. You even managed to piss Ellen off and she's pretty easy going. You're not even original - everything you do is to copied off of Madonna. You can't copy her brain though and you can't fix stupid.

I just felt that the dress was nasty looking and totally unbecoming. Politics aside, it was a bad fashion choice.

  • September 23, 2010 - 11:38pm Jessica Hedger

People need to stop worrying about celebrities and what they are doing and start minding their own business. It would solve a lot of problems. Bottom line: get over it. Meat is murder and murder tastes good. :)

  • September 23, 2010 - 11:29pm Danielle Almeida

  • September 23, 2010 - 5:18pm Faye Beale

  • September 23, 2010 - 10:21am Phoebe Jo

How dare you all point a finger and yell murder over an ANIMAL when you are willing to tolerate the MURDER of an unborn child.

  • September 23, 2010 - 9:22am Donna Archer

@Dori Ciccarelli....I appreciate what you said about factory farming but a lot of the people here just don't care about the agony and cruelty of what these animals go through..and until you research one cannot imagine how terrible and unbelieveable it really is...look at the comments...they think it is cool
