A form-fitting, pencil skirt can seem intimidating (especially when it's in a bright hue like turquoise, royal blue or purple), but the style is actually more flattering than it appears.

"The design immediately changes your posture by forcing you to stand up straighter, which automatically makes you look leaner," says Us Weekly Fashion Director Sasha Charnin Morrison. "Also, stretch fabrics act like a body slimmer by sucking everything in."

The trick is to pair a tight skirt with sky-high pumps to elongate your legs and create a slimmer silhouette, in addition to wearing it with the right top. (Check out the stunning results on The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco.)

To hide a belly bulge, try a loose-fitting tank with a flashy sequin jacket, then cinch everything with a belt at the waist. If you want a daytime appropriate look, tuck in a tailored sleeveless blouse and top with a sleek cardigan.
