Most Stylish New Yorkers 2012: Leslie Fremar
Name: Leslie Fremar
Occupation: Celebrity stylist; designer
Get-dressed Genius: Think selecting the ideal outfit is hard? Try doing it for Charlize Theron. And Scarlett Johansson. Oh, and Reese Witherspoon and Julianne Moore, too. "I try very hard to cater to each client's need separately," says the native Canadian, who got her start toiling for Anna Wintour at Vogue. "I think that's one of my strengths, that I'm able to take into consideration their body type, their age, things they like, and put that together into a look." Her own style, she says, has "an androgynous, clean, tailored aesthetic."
Good Investments: "My career has exposed me to beautiful things and craftsmanship, so I now buy more expensive things but less overall. I used to love disposable things you wear for one season because they were trendy. But now I invest in amazing coats or a gorgeous pair of pants that I wear all the time and keep them in closet long term," says the mother of one (who's expecting another baby in October). "I have a Dries van Noten coat that I will never part with and a pair of Celine flats that are so comfortable. And my Cartier watch will be in my life forever."
On-the-Road Retail: "Someone once told me to shop on vacation because wherever you go, it's the opposite season of where you live and what you need will be on sale," says Fremar, who recently launched her second collection with Fruit of the Loom. (Her tees, sweaters, dresses and leggings are available at Bloomingdale's.) "If you live in New York, the coats and winter pants are usually on sale in L.A."
Quote: "New York is a very accepting place. People aren't very judgmental. They're doing their own thing and have blinders on. That gives everyone the freedom to express themselves with fashion. It's a great place to be adventurous."
