Who cares about the color? This apparel company is seeing green! The retailer behind the Internet's most talked-about (and wildly debated) dress said on Friday, Feb. 27, that the black and blue number is selling like fury after a Tumblr image of it went viral on Thursday.
The world debated the true colors of #TheDress, and whether it was blue and black or white and gold, across all social media platforms. While there were scientific explanations for why people were at odds over the colors of the dress, a second photo of the dress posted by BuzzFeed on Friday, definitively proved that the item was in fact, blue and black.
According to Fortune, a Roman Originals spokesperson revealed that the company's sales overall were up a whopping 347 percent on Friday. The British retailer noted that folks would come to the site with the lure of the world's most famous dress, and end up purchasing other items as well.
And while skeptics have wondered if this was a brilliant idea that came directly from Roman Originals itself, the company's creative manager said that was not the case.
"This is 100 percent not a marketing campaign by us," Ian Johnson told NBC News. "It came by complete surprise."
The 300 dresses available on Roman Originals' website sold out in half an hour on Friday morning, but the company can fulfill orders until end of day. "We're vastly over where we'd be normally," Johnson told NBC News. "Our website's currently at about a million visits to this page alone… We can guarantee that we'll make it through the day. The weekend, we'll have to see."
The website isn't the only place where Roman is getting slammed. "We're getting calls constantly," Johnson told NBC. "About 150 calls in the last 45 minutes."
The dress currently retails at £50 (or $77), and is offered in additional colors including ivory, red, and pink.
As for whether it could be offered in white and gold? Johnson said the company is attempting to figure out whether it was a possibility to create that version. "We're currently looking into it," he noted.
