Adam Lambert on AMAs: "I Did Get Carried Away"

Wednesday – November 25, 2009 – 8:36am

Adam Lambert says he had "no clue at all" that his racy performance during Sunday's American Music Awards would ignite such a firestorm of controversy.

"I admit, I did get carried away, but I don't see anything wrong with it," he said on CBS' The Early Show Wednesday. "I do see how people got offended and that was not my intention. My intention was just to interpret the lyrics to my song and have a good time up there."

The singer, who performed his new single "For Your Entertainment," said his sexually-charged moves -- which included smooching another man and simulating oral sex -- were not a part of his rehearsal and were "impromptu."

"ABC was taken a little by surprise -- and that wasn't my intention," he said. "I wasn't being sneaky." Being on stage, he said, "It got the most of me."

He said that he "can understand" why parents are upset. But "honestly, it didn't cross my mind ... children. It was almost 11 o'clock. It was a nighttime show. I was there in the audience full of mostly adults."

Because he has a theater background, he said he sometimes forgets that there's "a camera on. I am programmed to kind of look at who's in the live audience."

Lambert, 27, said he was "looking out in the crowd" and saw some of his favorite pop stars and thought, "'I wanna let loose!' It just kind of got the best of me."

He said though many complained, a lot of people also enjoyed his performance.

"Like Idol, I have the tendency to divide people," he said. "Apples and oranges. You either like it or you don't."

He also said that if he had been "a female pop performer doing the moves ... I don't think there would have been nearly as much of an outrage."

Janet Jackson grabbed a male dancer's crotch, he noted.

"I didn't hear one peep about that..." he said, adding that people re complaining because "I am a gay male." Asked if he would do anything over, he said, "I would sing it a little bit better!"

In the future, "I will probably make more of a little bit more of an effort to stay consistent with what I do during rehearsal to what I do during the show," Lambert said. "That is something I am learning. That way, if anyone has any problems with what I am doing, that can be explored during rehearsal."

His message to fans? "This is one song, one production number..." he said. "I hope people don't put me in a box and say, 'Oh, he's nasty and he's going to be that way all the time!' It was one performance."

I don't care if it was a man or a woman who simulated oral sex ... wrong is wrong!! Adam Lambert is repulsive... He went way over the line, and is only now apologizing because he is afraid his actions put his career on the line...guess he should of thought about that before he went out of his way to "shock" or prove a point about his sexuality to the viewers.

People...get over it...I mean really! You all are making a big deal over this just like you did Janet Jackson's boob falling out of her clothes. That was a comlete accident that set her career back but you know what...she's still doing her thing just like Adam will continue to. Because like it or not, they have talent. That thing you might not approve of but 1000's other do. They are entertainers. So while you all b' and moan about it, their careers will go on and they will still sell records. Why don't you go find something to really be outraged about such as children trafficking or the homeless. If you spent as much time on issues like that as you did on websites like this worrying about performer then our world would be in a much better place. Sheesh!

he is such a DISAPPOINTMENT!!! I voted and voted for Adam on Idol - I didn't care that he was gay - I care that he sold his soul for fame just like his hideous mentor Lady Gaga.

What is the world coming to! I won't watch a show I know this guy is on! I don't want to see him! If we don't speak out what will performers do next. I don't care who you are or what you sexual desires are. Just keep it in your bedroom!

Adam Lambert's sexuality is not the problem. He sings with his tongue flying out and it repulses me. By the way he really isn't that good a singer but good at screaming. Where is the talent these days? The only way this guy thought he would be a hit was to cross the line and gain lots of exposure. He did that, hopefully I won't have to put up with him for much longer. Taylor Swift won everything and why? All I can imagine is that people are tired of the freak shows. Number one album is Bon Jovi, a nice guy with a repertoire of songs that are great, and he can sing. Wake up to the real world, Lambert!

The oral-sex simulation part of the performance was rather innappropriate, I'll admit. His kissing the guitarist on the other hand? I had no problem with it. It's true, female musicians do do things like that all the time, and there is never a controversy. He's gay. Why would he kiss a female? He just got caught up in the moment, it's not a big deal. And as for children? They should definitely not be up that late seeing a music awards show, where something like this is just BOUND to happen, or someone says somethng innappropirate. Those parents that are complaining are the ones that are truely irresponsible. Adam Lambert is just up there doing his this, and if people can't accept that, then just change the channel.

I voted numerous times for Adam on American Idol, and I thought his performance was COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE!! The AMAs are not the VMAs..thats why people have a problem with it! What's next? Actually having SEX on stage?
  • November 26, 2009 - 10:10pm Mindy Says:

This is exactly what he wanted , is to have people talk about him, he is very clever, and it hasn;t hurt his album sales, in fact it is helping his album sales, lol. mindy, he is very smart, a total actor, entertainer with a fantastic voice,, Adding some excitement to the music Industry, and he has done it!!go Adam,

I always liked him from the first time I saw him on American Idol. I knew he was gay. Didn't matter as long as he kept his sexual preferrences in private. Too, bad Adam you could have been a big star. Your behavior is beyond disgusting.
  • November 26, 2009 - 2:10pm Alexa Says:

I thought his preformance was commletely innapropriate from the crotch part to the kissing part and everything in between, including the chair and pole dancers.
  • November 26, 2009 - 12:30pm Dissappointed Says:

I have nothing against gay people and use to like Adam Lambert. I think it is very sad when you have to behave this way to get attention. One of the best gay singers of all time is Freddy Mercury of Queen who is definately missed. Just because you are gay you don't have to pretend you are having sex on stage. I'm offended when a heterosexual behaves like that so don't use that as an excuse. you should show people you can be a class act based on your singing talents not your sexual moves. This society has really gone down hill!! Pity!!
  • November 26, 2009 - 12:03pm Britt Says:

I thought his performance was awesome. He is a great performer and people need to be less close minded about sexual preferences. We haven't seen or heard anyone like him probably since Aerosmith and now everyone thinks the norm is pop music that's safe like Miley Cyrus and Rhianna. We live in a free country and it's very diverse....people need to get used to it.
  • November 26, 2009 - 11:38am be strong Says:

I love Adam but I did not like few things on his performance. He did what he did but we do not have to say he is not talented. People make a mistake and make correction. that is all I know. we do not need to act like we have done any mistake. It is his first performance and he will make some kind of growing for the feature.I am not gay by the way but I want people to see it like they did it one for the first time and how they react for it. He is new so, give him time but abc that cancled the show should be ashmed it is not the right way. I do not like to maintion other performer to make I or other are correct or not for this kind of sitiuation if it is good it is ok to count their name but if not it is not good.
  • November 26, 2009 - 10:15am Joe Says:
