  What a sad performance by Ricky Gervais. All the hype that HE was going emcee the Golden Globes, only to have the big let down! His timing (delivery) was awful. Swipes and insults alone, without substance just comes across as the pervertible lead balloon. Just a small fish trying to make it in a big pond.

  sorry, turntable, but when ricky said "i enjoy my drink as much as the next guy unless that guy is mel gibson" i think he means he enjoys his drink, but mel enjoys it a lot more. in other words, he enjoys drinking but mel surpasses him. although theres no need to type in all caps and get superdefensive cause none of this matters. at all.

  For the VERY not so clever, what happened was this: Ricky confesses that he had a good bit to drink. At the same time, he defends himself by implying that he is no different than other men with respect to how much they like to drink. He goes one step further, adding that that Mel Gibson likes to drink (or, at least, DID like to drink) more than Ricky does -- and in fact, Mel likes to drink more than all other men do. Which, of course, is highly unlikely and therefore absurd, but the absurdity is what makes it funny. Something else that makes the joke funny is this: It's already bad enough that Ricky has had a few drinks and he is standing there, defending it, but then he gets just plain ludicrous when he starts giving Mel Gibson sh*t.

  British people think of Australians as 'less than'. That's what was at the core of Ricky Gervais' comment. It was a low-blow, out-of-bounds, and generally a jab at all Aussies. It's alright, Ricky. Like most (if not all) people whom are not funny, shock-value is all you have left to stand upon (i.e. Howard Stern).
