His side to the story! America watched as Nick Viall got his heart broken on the season finale of The Bachelorette on Monday, July 28. The Milwaukee native was rejected by Andi Dorfman before he even had time to pick out a Neil Lane engagement ring.

Naturally, he was left devastated, and even made several attempts to see the girl of his dreams before the live "After the Final Rose" segment aired. But the newly-engaged Dorfman wasn't ready to see him until the show, when he blurted out, "If you weren't in love with me, I'm just not sure why, like, why you made love with me."

The Bachelorette star did not take the comments well, chiding Viall for his "below the belt" attack. So on Tuesday, July 29, Viall tried to explain his comments during a conference call.

"I think she was very caught off guard by the question, and quite honestly, I was surprised it came out, but I think I was very much in the moment, and it was something that I felt was weighing on my mind," he said. "It wasn’t necessarily about the sex, but just the level of intimacy about that night."

Viall also attributed his spontaneous question to how off-putting Dorfman's demeanor was during "After the Final Rose."

"I was more taken aback by how cold she seemed even from when she first came out," he said of Josh Murray's fiancee. "It didn’t connect."

While Viall doesn't necessarily regret asking Dorfman the intimate question, he understands it wasn't necessarily the best environment to do so.

"I definitely wish I would had that opportunity in private to have that conversation," he admitted. "I did not go into it last night, in any way expecting that to come up, or ask her, and again I think I was just so caught off guard by her demeanor and that answer and again that kind of lack of empathy. If I have any regrets [it] is [that] I didn’t want in any way to humiliate her, or make her feel that way, and I feel very sorry if she did feel that way, and that makes me sad."
