Julia Roberts, 43: It's "Bizarre" to Play Mom to Ryan Reynolds, 34, in Film

In the family drama Fireflies in the Garden, out this Friday, Julia Roberts plays mother to Ryan Reynolds -- despite just a nine-year age difference between the stars.

At Wednesday's L.A. premiere of the film, Roberts, 43, admitted to Us Weekly portraying the mother-son bond with Reynolds, 34, was "bizarre at first, because he's so tall!"
The real-life mother of three added, "But it worked out all right. He's a good boy!"

Although Fireflies (also starring Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson and Hayden Panettiere) was completed and ready for theaters in 2008, distribution issues delayed its release for three years. At the time of filming, Roberts was seven months pregnant with Henry, now 4, her youngest with husband Daniel Moder. (Henry's older siblings are twins Hazel and Finn, nearly 7.)

"[I was] nice and ready to have a baby!" the Pretty Woman actress quipped. Watching the flick now offers a great time capsule of her pregnancy, she told Us. " When I see it now and he is this big boy who can dress himself and do these things, it really is touching to see that."

Julia plays his mom but it's when his character is a child. Ryan and Julia are never on screen together in the movie. Julia is a beautiful woman who doesn't look like 43 and could easily play Ryan's girlfriend or wife in a movie. Sandra Bullock is older than Julia and she played Ryan's romantic interest in The Proposal.
She does kinda look older than she is. I always think she has to be 50. And he is a yummy guy who does not look as old as he does
she's not the first actress less than a decade older than another actor to play their mother there was less than 9 years between Anne Bancroft and Katherine Ross who played her daughter in 1967's the Graduate or Angela Lansbury was less than 3 years older than Laurance Harvey who's mother she Plays in the 1962 version of The Manchurian Candidate
while I am a fan of hers, I often wonder why people werent as nasty about her when she started seeing her current husband. He was still married to his wife, and he left his wife for Julia, and yet no one really gave her any grief.
She plays the mother to Ryan's character as a child, I recall. But remover the makeup, and I would believe, that she is mother to grown Ryan as well.
