She is a California Gurl, after all! Amy Heckerling wants Katy Perry to go where she, well, has often gone before: Beverly Hills. The director and screenwriter wants the pop superstar to play Cher Horowitz in the upcoming Clueless musical.
Heckerling, 61, wrote and directed the 1995 comedy, which starred Alicia Silverstone as the determined and priviledged high school student. The director revealed her casting wish while attending the Shelter premiere at the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
“I love Katy Perry,” she told Vulture. “But you never know what will happen, she has a whole big schedule.” Last year, Heckerling told Vulture that Perry, 31, “expressed interest” about the role. (Some of Perry’s acting credits include The Smurfs (2011), The Smurfs 2 (2013), and the series Raising Hope.)
As previously reported, the Clueless musical will most likely debut in NYC in 2016. Heckerling, meanwhile, wouldn’t mind if it opened tomorrow. “We have another reading, and then hopefully workshops,” she said.
The show will surely be chock-full of famous quotes like “As if!” and “Whatever!” The musical numbers, however, have yet to be disclosed.
“I don’t think [fans] will go, ‘Oh, it’s just karaoke to the movie, or it is an entirely different animal.’ It is true to the movie, but it sings, hopefully,” Heckerling explained.
“I’ve written what they call the book,” she told Extra in June. “And it’s a jukebox musical.”
