Mistresses Premiere Recap: Jennifer Esposito Steps in (Almost) Seamlessly to Replace Alyssa Milano

Jennifer Esposito as Calista Raines in ABC's Mistresses
Jennifer Esposito as Calista Raines on ABC's Mistresses.

Mistresses is back for an all new season of drama, shirtless moments, and wine guzzling –– and there's a new girl in town! Jennifer Esposito joins the cast as fashion designer Calista Raines, who replaces Savi (Alyssa Milano) as the new member of everyone's favorite foursome.

Check out Us Weekly's recap to find out where your favorite wine-drinking BFFs are in their lives, and how Mistresses managed to write Savi out of the show. (Hint: It might have something to do with catching her sister making out with her husband on the beach. Awkward!)

Savi Is Missing in Action

Our worst fears are realized. After walking down to the beach during Joss (Jes Macallan) and Scott's (Justin Hartley) surprise wedding last season, Savi found her sister making out with her ex-husband, Harry (Brett Tucker). Poor Savi was so traumatized by Joss' betrayal that she immediately left town, sending a brief text to disown Joss as her sister. All we know is that Savi's traveling around Italy and has pretty much rejected her friends save for a few postcards. Hmmm, you'd think she'd call to check if Karen's (Yunjin Kim) HIV-negative, but who knows? Maybe phones don't work over in Europe. (Note: They definitely do.)

Thank the Mistresses Gods: Karen Is HIV Negative

The good news is that Karen does not have HIV. The weird news is that Karen's hunky doctor, Alec Adams (Ed Quinn), ran her blood work illegally and found out that she's the key to curing his wife's fatal illness. Because of course! At first, Karen wanted to sue Alec, but instead she did what any sane person would do: donate her stem cells to his wife. In fact, Karen formed a close bond with Vivian Adams (Sonja Bennett) — partially because she was so upset by Savi's departure, and partially because she was convinced that her life has purpose. We're thrilled that Karen's being a good person, but something doesn't feel right about this … maybe due to the whole medical malpractice thing.

Joss and Harry Are Just Friends –– for Now

Despite her loving feelings toward Harry, Joss decided that she couldn't move forward in their steamy new relationship without approval — or at least forgiveness — from Savi. The problem? Savi was ignoring Joss' copious phone calls and messages, and to make matters worse, Scott's ancient grandmother collapsed at the wedding and died. Oh, and Joss decided to tell him about her infidelity during the memorial. Unsurprisingly, Scott kicked Joss out and then proceeded to show up drunk at Harry's house and sock him in the eye.

Joss eventually decided that she and Harry should be just friends, but after some advice about "doing her" from Calista (more on this newcomer later), it looks like they might be hooking up sooner rather than later. Joss even swung by Harry's house to counsel him on recent work drama! Sorry, Savi who?

April Adopts a Man-Child (and an Actual Child)

Thanks to finding out the truth about her dad (read: he's secretly been alive all these years), Lucy (Corinne Massiah) decided that she hates her mom — which means their bond is more fragile then ever. In an effort to make nice with her kiddo, April (Rochelle Aytes) thought it would a good idea to take Lucy's half-brother Scotty (Julius Fair) and his uncle, Mark (Rob Mayes), under her wing while Scotty's mom works on a cruise ship. Sigh. Bless her for trying.

Unfortunately, Mark is an inept man-child who wants to hit on ladies all day, so April did the exact opposite of what she should do: She invited Mark and Scotty to live with her. That's one way to gain back Lucy's trust, right?

Give a Warm Welcome to Calista — But Don't Necessarily Trust Her

Here's what we know about Calista (thanks to the fact that Joss ran into her in a parking lot and quickly became her BFF): This jaded housewife is a world-famous fashion designer who's convinced that her husband is cheating on her. In fact, this week she recruited Joss to catch her man in action, which led to a bonding session of epic proportions. Calista even convinced Joss that she should move forward with Harry and forgive herself. The catch? She then showed up at Harry's restaurant at the end of the episode and had a seriously devious look in her eye….

We can’t wait to see more from her!

Mistresses airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
