Meant to be with Maks! Peta Murgatroyd always knew she and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were going to get married, despite their split in 2013. The Australian native and her Dancing With the Stars BFF Sharna Burgess gushed over the couple’s engagement and wedding plans when they dropped by Us Weekly‘s NYC headquarters recently.
“When we dated in 2012, we used to talk about it all the time. It was just something that, I don’t know, it was just like it was going to happen,” Murgatroyd, 29, tells Us. “We just took a little detour for a year.”
Murgatroyd and the Ukrainian hunk, 36, dated for 10 months in 2012 and 2013 before rekindling their romance last year. Chmerkovskiy popped the question during a performance of Sway at the Olympia Theater in Miami, Florida, back in December. (Murgatroyd and Burgess, 30, have been performing on the DWTS Live Tour for the past three months.)
“I’ve always said he has the most incredible generosity. He wants to take care of everybody that he knows,” Murgatroyd gushes to Us. “He has an incredible sense of humor when you get to see it. I think that his bad-boy image is slowly kind of drifting away — and that harsh Maksim image. He is the biggest teddy bear you’ll ever meet underneath that Ukrainian look. I just love him. Everything about him. He’s just a great man. And somebody that I’ve always seen as being a great father and a great husband.”
Burgess sadly was MIA during the proposal, but she knew it was coming. “I think Maks knows I’ll kill him if he messes this one up!” she says, laughing. “But I don’t believe he will. That’s not even in the cards. They’re so obsessed with each other. This was meant to be. It was always going to happen.”
