Us Weekly's TV critic John Griffiths gives Jen Aniston's much-anticipated appearance on Cougar Town 3-1/2 stars. Read on for his review of Wednesday night's season premiere, which airs on ABC at 9:30 p.m. (EST).
Comforting news: Friends icon Jennifer Aniston hasn't lost her sitcom finesse.
She's hilariously wily in the season premiere of her pal Courteney Cox's sophomore sitcom, guest-starring as Glenn, a crunchy therapist who has client Jules (Cox) convinced she can solve all her issues. Starting with: how to deal with the fact that Jules' fledgling love, Grayson (Josh Hopkins, funny and sexy as ever), wants some alone time.
Without spoiling the gags, it's safe to say that Glenn isn't all she appears to be, and the actress herself is clearly having a blast playing a smarmy New Age type (even if that's a little old hat).
Still, this underrated comedy's writers do more than rely solely on stunt casting. Glenn turns out to be a catalyst to some sweet relationship epiphanies for Jules, and a bromantic subplot involving Grayson's concern for Jules' wounded ex (Bryan Van Holt) is actually touching. Loopy laughs, wistful moments — Aniston is just the proverbial icing on the cake!
