Oh no he didn't!

Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais pulled no punches during his opening monologue at Sunday's awards fest -- mercilessly savaging Angelina Jolie, Charlie Sheen, Tom Cruise and other A-listers.

The British comic said the crowd should look forward to "a night of partying and heavy drinking -- or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast," and then went on to re-tell the Two and a Half Men actor's notorious NYC plaza fit.

He then trashed the nomination of The Tourist starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp despite critical pans.

"Who knows? I haven't seen it," Gervais admitted. "There's this ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That's rubbish. they also accepted bribes." Depp was seen in the audience making a sour face.

The host then mocked the cast of un-nominated Sex and the City 2. "Girls, we know how old you are! I saw one of you on an episode of Bonanza."

Gervais praised the equally unheralded I Love You, Phillipp Morris starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. "Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay -- which is the exact opposite of some famous Scientologists," he said as the crowd booed, presumably referencing Tom Cruise and John Travolta. "Probably! My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

Later in the show, Gervais also took a dig at Bruce Willis, introducing him as "Ashton Kutcher's dad!" Willis, introducing a clip, simply smirked.

Bottom line is I saw quote from Gervas. These are the most privileged people and they try to act like they someone else. All he did was RIB some celebs and they can't take it? The accidental Tourist was not a well received film. Whose fault is that? Oh well you can't mention it without upsetting Depp or Jolie. Give me a break. OMG look it's Angelina Jolie get out o her way. These are people just like any of you reading this blog. They are talented, good looking, rich and lucky to be where they are.... But they are NOT BETTER THAN YOU! Do you take some ribbing at work? Well these people should be able to take some ribbing too. Especially in these economic times.

Judith Tobit said:. I did see a clip of him introducing Robert Downey Jr. - something about "here's a guy some of you might know better from the Betty Ford Clinic or the County lockup" - Downey just kinda smiled Actually he didn't. He immediately made a comment about "despite the awards show tonight being completely mean spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say it's going good" (not an exaxt quote but think I'm pretty close). Honestly I loved most of Ricky's jokes & that was the only time in the night I had a problem w/ them. I like Robert Downey Jr. a lot & feel for him. I feel like he's someone who has REALLY struggled to turn his life around & has which should be applauded. He could've been another Charlie Sheen but he's not. So I did think that joke was a bit tasteless & unneccasry. But I'm also w/ Bill Fripp..."Asthon Kuther's Dad" Omg I think I spit whatever I was drinking out I was laughing so hard. Genius.

What else did they expect??? It's Ricky Gervais. This is what he is known for. Rude, crude, but dead on kind of humor. And let's not forget the ppl who run the Golden Globes had to approve his stand up before airing to make sure he was PC for the censors. If you can't laugh at yourself something is wrong.

Ricky is right on the money when it comes to his disrespectful sense of humor. Many, many people like it. They cut down their friends in front of other people, behind their backs. Then they say. "I was only kidding." Ricky is playing to this large group of people and it works. If he was to change to good, clean and uplifting humor, many, many people would turn him off. His 'roasting' was tasteless, crude and rude. He has low self esteem and is very jealous of the accomplished actors at the Golden Globe Award show. He has a cruel side to his personality to be able to exibit humor (?) like he does. I doubt he will be asked to host again.

ASHTON KUTCHER'S DAD! FRIGGIN HILARiOUS! ROFLMAO!

Ricky was just being himself - the so-called stars are a little precious - if they wanted someone plastic they should have hired somebody else. I guess the yanks don't have the same sense of humour as the rest of the world.

The truth HURTS but not everyone has the courage to say it, especially on National TV. KUDOS to Ricky and bring on the next AWARDS with him hosting again.

I think his comments were mean spirited- I want to be entertained and laugh. Please explain to me why putting someone down is a source of hilarity. No wonder we have to much bullying. and why exactly do we have to know he is an athiest? what was that about?

I didn't bother watching the back-patting glamor fest, but from what I've heard, Gervais was brilliant. I did see a clip of him introducing Robert Downey Jr. - something about "here's a guy some of you might know better from the Betty Ford Clinic or the County lockup" - Downey just kinda smiled. Nothing wrong with roasting the stars. It's better than all the fawning and gushing - such as Queen Latifah did last week. It was disgusting watching her with the Kardashians in the audience. NOT amused!

I thought he was hilarious. A little mean but damn everything he said was true! That is what made it so funny. Everybody loves to kiss each others butts in hollywood so I thought it was refreshing. Hey Angelina, Johnny, Bruce, Charlie Sheen are living incredible lives if they can't take a little jabbing than their egos are truly too big.

  • January 18, 2011 - 1:11am Jana Peterson

    He's hilarious. Period.

  • January 18, 2011 - 12:20am Racy Trace

They are actors and celebrities NOT untouchables. If you put yourself out there you have to expect and a little backhand every now and then. Ricky was funny!

  • January 17, 2011 - 9:52pm Jennifer Salinas Keith

Ricky was great. Those inflated egos could use a reality check, politics in Hollywood alive and well, The Tourist was horrible...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has issued a statement contradicting nearly everything the below HFPA source allegedly told PopEater. Here's their official stance on the night's events, as reported by EW: "We loved the show. It was a lot of fun and obviously has a lot of people talking. When you hire a comedian like Ricky Gervais, one expects in your face, sometimes outrageous material. Certainly, in this case, he pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far. The HFPA would never condone some of his personal remarks. Overall, however, the show was among the best weâ??ve ever had and we were pleased."

Why do these millionaires need awards anyway? When was the last time you saw hard working Americans who go to work every day for minimum wage get an award?

  • January 17, 2011 - 4:39pm Joe Lewis

    not far enough

  • January 17, 2011 - 3:07pm Kathy Allen

How exactly did Gervais "trash' Angelina Jolie?
