Steve Carell will not be appearing in The Office series finale

Steve Carell already bid farewell to The Office once, and apaprently he's not planning on doing it again. Executive producer Greg Daniels told reporters in a conference call on Wednesday, May 1, that the Carell will not be appearing in the May 16 series finale.

"I think Steve felt, and I agree, that the 'Goodbye, Michael' episode was his goodbye and he didn't want to overshadow the ending that all the other characters deserved," he said via Reuters. Carell, 50, left the show in a special farewell episode in 2011 after playing Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch manager, Michael Scott, on the NBC show for seven seasons.

Though he may not be making an appearance, Carell did tell Us Weekly at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year that he will be watching the finale. "I can't wait," he said. "I definitely will."

Daniels also offered a few hints for what fans can expect to see in the much-anticipated series finale. "After attempting to beat that [British] ending in a number of different ways, we ended up doing something very similar," he revealed. Starring Ricky Gervais, the original British version ended with the characters reuniting after becoming reality TV stars.

The showrunner also said that he's been trying to get a longer time slot for the finale. "The network (NBC) is being very creative about scraping some more time without us having to start the finale at a weird time that will cause half the audience to miss the first 10 minutes," he said. "We are still hopeful of getting slightly more than one hour."
