This Is Us' Shocking Fall Finale: Best Twitter Reactions (What's Next for Toby?!)

Be still, our beating hearts! This Is Us ended with quite a shocker during its fall finale on Tuesday, December 6 — spoilers ahead!

The episode featured plenty of emotional moments, with Randall (Sterling K. Brown) helping to save his coworker's life, Kevin (Justin Hartley) deciding to put up his own money to finance the play, and William (Ron Cephas Jones) reuniting with his boyfriend.

But undoubtedly the most heart-wrenching scene was Toby (Chris Sullivan) surprising Kate (Chrissy Metz) at her family's place, where he later collapsed. Is this the end of the Pearson daughter's benevolent love interest?

The pair split earlier in the season, owing in part to his going off a diet, but he made a touching plea in the December 6 episode to patch things up.

"I can live without pizza and cookies and potato chips and whatever that brownie thing was that they were serving on the plane," Toby told her. "The one thing I cannot live without is you."

Sadly, after he chatted with Kate's kin and then got busy with her upstairs, Toby clutched his chest and fell to the floor. The family called an ambulance, and it was unclear whether he would live to see the second half of the season.

Twitter users were clearly not happy with the twist. One fan — referencing a meme that popped up at the start of The Walking Dead season 7 about the well-being of Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) — wrote, "If Toby dies, we riot?"

Another viewer tweeted, "Toby has no choice but to live. That's decided."
