Dirty Dancing Town to Hold Patrick Swayze Memorial

Thursday – September 17, 2009 – 2:47pm

The residents of the North Carolina town in which Dirty Dancing was filmed are planning a memorial service for Patrick Swayze.

Swayze -- who died Monday of pancreatic cancer at age 57 -- was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as bad boy Johnny Castle in the 1987 dance drama.

On Saturday, the town of Lake Lure will remember the his life with a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Firefly Cove -- the housing development that served as Camp Chimney in Dirty Dancing.

The service is free, but visitors will be asked to donate to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Swayze's Dirty Dancing costar Jennifer Grey opened up to Usmagazine.com after his death, calling him "a real cowboy with a tender heart.

"Patrick was a rare and beautiful combination of raw masculinity and amazing grace," she told Us in a statement. "He was fearless and insisted on always doing his own stunts, so it was not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified."

Bostonian, Lake Lure is more boring than Mountain Lake, hands down. I went there for the memorial and practically nothing was left from the movie except the stairs Baby practiced dancing on, which are barely recognizable. Lake Lure in and of itself is a beautiful place with lots of things to do, but for a die-hard Dirty Dancing/Patrick Swayze fanatic, I was disappointed. Although there were many gift/souvenir shops, none of them had any Dirty Dancing memorabilia at all. I even asked one of the shop owners about the lack of Dirty Dancing items and he said "Uh, because that was 20 years ago."

I didn`t care for Dirty Dancing. I loved watching him in The Beast. He was great. RIP Patrick

While a lot of the movie was filmed at Lake Lure, they also filmed a lot at the Mountain Lake Hotel near Pembroke, VA. It was the site of the outside of Kellerman's. The cottage Baby's family lived in was also there, as well as the gazebo. Another scene they did there was when Patrick said goodbye to Jennifer after he was fired and drove off. The creator of Dirty Dancing said that they only spent two weeks filming at the Mountain Lake Hotel, because it was too expensive to stay any longer. I've been to the Mountain Lake Hotel, but it is a kind of boring place. I'd love to go to Lake Lure someday.

All of the indoor Main Lodge scenes were filmed inside the Lake Lure Inn, the water scene doing jumps, the log over the creek, the watermelon steps, the cabin Johnny stayed in, the Employee cabins & employee lodge, the porch with Dad sitting by the lake and of course the golf Course scenes. Were all filmed here in Lake Lure... Doesn't matter what wikipedia says... We lived thru a whole summer of Hollywood taking over Lake Lure. Then 10 years of tourists coming to look at it all... They distroyed the cabins & employee lodge writing all over the walls...

Many scenes were filmed in Lake Lure. I used to live there. I also have friends who have pieces of the floor boards from the main dance hall after it was torn down. The golf course scene where Baby asks her father for money ($250 for the abortion) is from the 16th green on a Lake Lure golf course called Bald Mountain. It was also filmed in VA, but much of it was in Lake Lure.

There were quite a few scenes filmed in NC. From what I have read it was pretty split, half and half between a resort near Roanoke and half in Lake Lure. This is what I found: http://www.blueridgecountry.com/archive/dirty-dancing.html

Only one scene (water lift) was filmed in NC and the rest of the movie was filmed in VA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Dancing
