Italian-American Alyssa Milano "Upset" With MTV's Jersey Shore

Friday – December 11, 2009 – 2:38pm

Count Italian-American Alyssa Milano among the non-fans of MTV's new reality show Jersey Shore.

The show -- which follows the booze-fueled nights of eight self-described "guidos" and "guidettes" on the Jersey Shore -- has outraged Italian-Americans, who claim it exploits a stereotype and gives the vacation destination a bad rap.

UNICO National, the nation's largest Italian American service organization, has even asked MTV to cancel the show.

Milano, 36, can see why.

"My husband actually showed me the trailer on YouTube last night, and I got upset," she told Usmagazine.com Thursday at the UNICEF ball in Beverly Hills. "It upset me. I was like, 'Turn that off!' So no, I don't think I'll be watching that!'"

But 21-year-old Jersey Shore star Nicole -- a.k.a. "Snookie" -- doesn't see what the big deal is.

"The Italian, whatever, national, whatever their organization is, they don’t understand that 'guidos' and 'guidettes' are good-looking people that, you know, like to make a scene and be center of attention and just take care of themselves," she said on The Wendy Williams Show Friday (check your local listings). "They are old-fashioned. They don't know that; they think it's offensive, because maybe in their time it was offensive, but now it's kind of a compliment. So they don't understand that and that is what we are trying to say. They are way overreacting to the show. We're 22 to 29 just having fun at the shore. They are just taking it way out of proportion."

You will note that at least 3 of the people on Jersey Shores PaulyD, J Woww and I believe 1 or 2 other guys are a mix of Spanish and Italian. While Snookie is actually from South America..Chile.

My dad is Spanish and he is very white. A lot of South Americans are of mixed race and thats why they all look so different. I also know many Latinos that are mostly of indian blood that love it when people call them Spanish.

In response to February 02, 2010 - 8:46am Spain Europe Says: It absolutely is revealing of your ignorance (definitely and uneducated person you are) in making such a generalization of "South Americans" not being Spanish, blah, blah, blah. You have no ideal...unless you've lived and have known an individual's family (genealogical)history, from any of the south American countries you're clueless. Educate yourself, it's truly rewarding! I know where my family comes from (south amer. and spain)and I have non blood relatives with the same kind of roots. Funny too...ony of my uncle's was born in Mexico, with history coming from Spain too. Get real and get over your Spanish self...Everytime I visit Spain, I notice some of the natives are dark (tan, light brown, olive) not so much "white" bread honey. White is just a color...doesn't mean anything. Be proud of your own bloodline and stop your wishy washy rant about other's that have nothing to do with your personal lineage. My mother (Spanish) once in a while will chuckle about people like you and she says "what an embarrassment to their families, no brains, no brains!) I like and LOVE my spicy family and friends...what wonderful, warm, loving, welcoming, hard working, encouraging, giving, strong and beautiful people!!! Not at all limiting, bitter and narrow minded such as yourself. I'd rather live the life of a happy person with a rainbow of bloodlines (plus loving life and people) any day, rather than a single person with a homogeneous mentality. Rise above your short comings of people...I guarantee you'll get a different perspective on life. Life is too short, so don't fret of racial crap, in the end nobody cares, especially when it's your time to leave this planet. Take care and try to see through clear eyes, come out of your fog. :-)

That creature that calls itself "Snooki" is the ugliest thing on two legs. Ugh. This show is so tacky; it's not even about them degrading themselves. They're degrading ALL HUMANS (except for that creature)! People who watch this shizz should be embarassed.

OMG GET A GRIP PEOPLE. These KIDS are not making the Italian-American people look bad. If they are truly the egotistical, selfish, nasty mouthed, self-centered drunks that they portray its a sad reflection on the YOUTH of today. and its not an insult IF ITS AN ACCURATE PORTRAYAL OF HOW THEY REALLY DO ACT IN REAL LIFE....which they do. So stop stressing out & DONT WATCH THE SHOW!! Helloooooo! and yes..im Italian-American and my father is from Calabria and he has BLOND HAIR AND BLUE EYES for those that think its not possible..geez

The reality is that these people really are ALL over the tri-state area - I am from Long Island originally and they are all over the place...but being Italian really has nothing to do with it - other ethnicities act this way too BUT it seems that this while "guido" lifestyle DOES attract CERTAIN ethnic groups more so than others - In NY, there are many Greek-Americans, Russians, and middle easterners that act this way too - SO,it is interesting why this appeals to certain groups and not others....anyone have any info about it, I would be interested.

People from Spain have it rougher in the US..cos many non white south americans that live in the US are called "Spanish" or the south americans themselves say they are "Spanish(My a.ss) when most of the ones who emigrate to the US are basically natives(indians) stop with the slandering..we get a bad rep cos of ignorant americans n put people against Spanish people(spain white people)Black americans speak english but that doesnt make them "english people"Mexicans etc "speak" spanish but they also arent Spanish people...its highly offensive so get it right dammit.

Seriously, old-fashioned? I'm the same age as you Snookie and the truth of the matter is UNICO is 110% correct, you are all trashy! I don't know where you people are originally from, but in my hometown of Italy, you don't parade yourself around like a bunch of drunk cafoni and puttane! If you're so Italian you should know what this means, and contrary to what you believe in your little world, it's NOT a compliment! You're all a disgrace to real Italians like myself. Black hair and a tan doesn't make you Italian at all because real Italians actually have class, something none of you could ever comprehend. A schifìu!

I grew up across the street from Nicole (snookie... bleh)and went to high school with her. She is 100% NOT ITALIAN. Her parents are italian and they adopted her from chile. She was an episode of that horrible MTV show "is she really going out with him" before landing the Jersey shore, and on that show she pretended she was italian too. She is gross, she is NOT ITALIAN, and she, like kim said, is a disgrace to our town.

Hey guys! I grew up across the street from AND went to high school with nicole "snookie", and she 100% not italian. She was adopted from south america (chile i believe) and both of her adoptive parents are Italian. She never Pretended to be italian in high school but i guess if there's a buck to be made she'll pretend alot of things. She was a gross little nugget in high school and she's a gross little nugget now.
  • January 20, 2010 - 4:32pm Rosily Says:

Plain and simple Snookums is TRASH! She is either of south american or central american descent, which is fine, BUT, DO NOT go around talking trash like a complete, inarticulate ignoramus and pass yourself off as an Italian American for all the world to see. She is just like Lillo Brancato who was columbian by birth and adopted by an Italian family. (Who went on to heroin addiction and an accomplice for murder, currently in jail.) That DOES NOT make one an Italian. WE are people that are proud of our Italian heritage and find it extremely upsetting to us that the likes of Snookums is representing us! She is cartoonish and buffoonish and why are people even paying attention to her. Why is she on TV and in magazines??? Shame on MTV for going this low. To be fair, they should portray the trash eschilon of other nationalities as well, not just the italians. Snookums and the rest of the crew should be STOPPED like real fast! I APPLAUD Alyssa Milano for speaking out against such stupidity and farce!Someone needs to call Snookie for what she really is....NOT ITALIAN!!!
  • January 18, 2010 - 11:59pm Joey Says:

I agree with Vince Im also of Spanish as in Spain and Italian heritage. This girl looks no more Italian than the man in the moon. What is her deal, why cant she just come out and say the truth. We italian people are not idiots and we know our own..she does not look italian nor act it. I would go on to further say she does not even look like people from mexico, central or south america that are mixed spanish and indian or other euro and indian. I would of guessed her for like mayan or incan descent or even asian or part filipina..but never italian. There are plenty of dark italians in the south of italy and sicily and sardena..but none of them have those features..sorry i dont buy it. Also I hate seeing this stereotypical crap on a people that have changed the world for the better. Look at all the great things that have come from Italy...and you are depiciting us like this? What a darn shame? Also that snoopey or whatever the hell her name is , to tell the Italian american groups to F off...and F you? Thats really nice! Remember this, its the public that makes you and I say ....booooooooo...snoopey dog or whatever you name is. You aint all that and a bag of chips...that is for sure!
  • January 17, 2010 - 11:46am Vince Says:

First of all, to this Denise lady who posted her comment...you must be smoking? I am of both Italian and Spaniard ( Spanish ie: Hispanic) heritage. My grandparents and parents came from both countries. Now for you to say that there is no common features between both groups is horse poop. Many Spaniards and Italians look similar. Look at Penelope Cruz...spaniard and looks like a young Sophia Loren. Many other examples. Now I will agree with you on this Snookey or whatever the hell her name is ...DOES NOT look spanish nor italian. She looks native of some sort from Central or South America. She does not even look mezitza...she looks indian as in native. I think for a non italian to play an italian..and a stereo-typical one at that is a disgrace!!

Suddy, you are an idiot! These kids are NOT just like blacks-- they are like every TRASHY twenty-somethings who likes to live in the 'now' by partying it up. I'm 21 and I see various races acting just like this during my summer breaks-- not just blacks.
  • January 08, 2010 - 5:52am Lauren Says:

Suddy - You think this is an accurate portrayal of Italian-Americans? Haha, you idiot. It's so obvious when people are bigoted. How about this is a somewhat typical portrayal of A LOT of young people in America today. You think these kids are the only ones out there acting like that? Think again, bud.
