New Moon Has Third-Biggest Opening Weekend in Film History

Sunday – November 22, 2009 – 3:39pm

The Twilight Saga: New Moon has had the third-biggest opening weekend in film history.

According to box office totals released Sunday, the vampire romance starring Rob Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart grossed a stellar $140.7 million during its first weekend in theaters, earning $72.7 million on its Friday opening day alone.

Find out why New Moon's Nikki Reed says she's on Team Jacob.

"I dare say in all the office pools, I don't think anyone had near this top gross," Summit Entertainment distribution president Richie Fay said.

New Moon, the second installment in Summit's Twilight Saga, also holds the record for most advance ticket sales. A reported 80% of all ticket buyers were women.

Heath Ledger's The Dark Knight remains the top-grossing weekend box office earner, taking in $158.4 million during its first outing in 2008. Spider-Man 3 stays in second place, earning $151.1 million out of the gate in 2007.

I think if New Moon had been released in summer like Dark Knight was it probably would have beaten it in first weekend sales. It is amazing what a couple of extra showings on Friday afternoon could have done especially in my area considering in two cites there were 26 showings at any given time and still was sold out the first week at least in advance...I saw hundreds of people trying to get in to showings that had been sold out for two months.

Everyone does have a right to their own opinio, so here is mine. I watched the movie Saturday and was not impressed at all. It was better than Twilight, but very boring and lacked fluidity. It was all over the place and when it did try to tell a story it was a big yawn. I have read the books and did enjoy all but the fourth. I feel this story is just not meant for the screen. Trust me people noone is going to win any Oscars for this movie full of plot holes. I do hope the next one is better but I doubt it will be.

I liked New Moon. I saw the midnight showing and it was a lot of fun. Then I went to see it again on Saturday morning and liked it even more. I thought one of the best scenes is the scene with Victoria and the werewolves. That was awesome. And the music they play in that scene fit perfectly. I wish they would have played Muse a bit longer though. The song "I Belong to You" is perfect with the theme of the movie. Plus Muse is just awesome to listen to! I also thought the acting was better in this movie, particularly Kristen Stewart. She wasn't as anxious in this one as she was in Twilight. And Jacob's transformation was awesome too. I love wolves so this was very exciting to see. I loved the novel New Moon. It stirred up different emotions while I read it, which is what a good novel does. In a way, I'm glad The Dark Knight is still the number one movie in weekend sales. I love The Dark Knight!

I think New Moon was great and a huge improvement on Twilight and that people have unrealistic expectations every time a movie is 'based' on a book. You will not get every single thing written in a book in the movie version or it would be 10 hours long! I look forward to the 3rd installment and hope the cast who must be exhausted are finally having a well earned rest this week.

It was made clear by several media/entertainment sources that the "inflation" factor is taken into consideration when the gross estimations are given. November 22, 2009 - 7:01pm ace Says: until they measure by ticket sales instead of dollar amount they cant really say that this movie was 3rd biggest opening weekend of all time - ticket prices have jumped $2 per in the last 3 years as well....they cant really compare it to Star Wars, Spider Man, Titanic etc...it just doesnt compute

Jaye, you know a ridiculous amount of info about the characters considering your never read the books and have no intention of doing so...moronic loser.
  • November 22, 2009 - 9:26pm Luna Says:

If by "gorgeous" you mean poor actors and pathetic excuses for high demand actors, then yes, Kristen and Rob are gorgeous.
