Chad Lowe’s Addiction a Factor in Swank Divorce

Hilary Swank, 31, cites hubby Chad Lowe’s substance abuse problem as one of the reasons the couple announced that they were divorcing last May.
"I knew something was happening but I didn't know what," Swank tells Vanity Fair in an interview excerpted by the New York Post. Lowe, who is now sober, battled addiction for years.
"When I found out, it was such a shock because I never thought he'd keep something from me. And yet, on another level, it was a confirmation of something I was feeling that was keeping us from being completely solid."
Though the addiction was the beginning of the end for the couple, Swank knew it was important to stand by her man. "When I found out, I wanted to be there, I knew it was the most important time of his life. That's when he needed me most."
"He's sober now. I don't want to make it seem like that's the sole reason; there were other factors. But that just kind of blew it open. It made me look at things a lot deeper. That's when you realize it's not going to work."
Still, the actress, who does not disclose the nature of her husband's addiction, gives Lowe credit for kicking his habit. "It's an enormous obstacle to overcome, and he's doing it. He's living a sober life," says Swank, who began dating Lowe in 1992 and married him in 1997. "I know how difficult it is, and I'm really proud of his sobriety."
The two-time Oscar winner also dismissed rumors that the end of her marriage was brought on by Lowe’s jealousy over her career.
"Chad is very supportive of my career," Swank says. "He is, I think, genuinely happy for my success. . . . I think that any frustration for him stemmed from the lack of opportunities in his own career."
Swank, who will next be seen in The Black Dahlia with Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett, is in the process of moving out of the couple’s 4,000-square-foot Greenwich Village brownstone in NYC.
"When I told you I'm the happiest I've ever been, it's not because I'm getting a divorce," she says. "It's because I'm living in truth now. My happiness has stemmed from being brutally honest with myself, facing truth every single day, no matter how hard it is."
Lowe, 38, and his managers could not be immediately reached for comment yesterday.

CHAD Lowe needs to air his own deamons not his ex-wife or soon to be ex-wife. It is hard enough to get a job in hollywood but if you have a history of drug abuse it is a risk producers do not want to take. The question is did Hillay betray CHAD confidents. I say yes.

Do you people pay attention? Hillary talked about his addiction, but also said that he's been clean for three years. It's something they've been battling together. If she was going to reveal HIS faults in their marriage, then why didn't she bring up hers? She also said that it takes TWO people to make it work or not work. The sanctity of marriage sure isn't what it used to be.

When celebrities do vanity fair interviews, they have to sign a contract beforehand that states they will openly answer all questions that are asked, and not hold back on any information, so i guess she had no choice really...she didnt know how deep the questions would be...but i guess she could have just thought about it a little more...that would be courteous...

Rob Lowe should have been the one to talk about his addiction not Hilary. I look at it as Hilary trying to do dammage control . She should not be telling on her own husband even if he did give the go ahead. Rob Lowe will never get a job with this over his head she has reuined his career. It sound like sour grapes to me.

For all we know she could have had the okay from him to talk about it.
They seemed close even as they were going through thier seperation.

Don't be naive, people! Make no mistake, this was a carefully orchestrated "outing" of his problem agreed on between the 2 of them, before the rumor hit the Enquirer, gossip blogs, etc and was projected in a sleazier fashion and hyped to epic proportions, thus requiring serious damage control. NO celebrity addict can be in drug/ alcohol abuse recovery for very long without it eventually being leaked to the press. This is the best way to handle it and trust me it was discussed between them. IT would not have been secret long and they surely discussed the best way to handle it. And anyone truly in recovery doesn't go blabbing about it to the press--especially early on--but it sure helps to have someone who loves you, even and ex, talking about your recovery in glowing terms before the nasty gossip press decides to "out" you and rip you to pieces.

maybe he said it was ok for her to talk about it. she has always seemed to be a class act, as he has too. they have remained friendly (what a concept for hollyweird) so it is possible he knew she was doing it. i read more of the interview (what was released) and she said she does not feel as if the marriage was a failure, that it was wonderful for 13+ yrs. when you come out of with a good relationship i can see how it would still be considered a success. they have been really respectful of each other and their commitment throughout. i very much doubt she did this without him knowing.

I don't think she should have brought up that information. It's private and why does everyone need to know why they divorced? Sometimes no matter how hard you try, people realize that it doesn't work anymore.

Hmmmm wonder what he is 'sober' from??? i feel bad for him...i mean, in my opinion, it must be hard having a wife who gets all this praise and all these great movie roles and all this attention, and you the hubby????????...what has he been in lately??- nothing much. he is basically living in her shadow. It would be easy to be in his place and want to drink/snort coke (whatever it was) to escape feeling worthless!!! (not to say he felt that way but i just think it would be hard not to)
