Halle Berry and beau Gabriel Aubry have named their newborn daughter Nahla Ariela Aubry, her rep confirms to Usmagazine.com.
What's behind the name?
"Nahla is the Arabic word for 'drink of water,'" Pamela Redmond Satran, the co-author of The Baby Name Bible and Cool Names for Babies tells Us. "Ariela is related to the Hebrew Ariel, which means 'lion of god.'
"Nahla is one of those names that is occasionally found among people of African or Arabic descent, but isn't commonly used in any particular culture," she adds.
Both names also have a connection to the big screen.
"Nala was the name of Simba's lioness mate in Disney's The Lion King, so it kind of has an African flavor as opposed to a genuine African pedigree," says Satran. And Ariela's "Disney antecedent," she says, is Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
Berry and Aubry welcomed the girl Sunday.
Aubry’s sister, Eugenie, told Us he couldn’t contain his excitement when Berry went into labor.
“He called my father to say, ‘It's time! It's happening!’” Eugenie said. “She was about to give birth. He sounded a bit nervous but happy!”
So will their little girl be as gorgeous as mom and dad?
“I don’t know,” Eugenie says. “I have to meet her first to see if that’s true!”

I'm sure their baby is gorgeous like the parents! Congrats! Beautiful name. I have a friend named Ariel and always liked that name, even before the Little Mermaid and Nahla is lovely too!

Congratulations to Halle Berry on the birth of her daughter. My real name is Nahla it comes from chapter 16 in the Muslim Holy Book called the Quran or the Koran. Chapter 16 is also called, Nahl or the "Bee",as it is translated. Look it up if you like. I also thought that this was interesting. I recently had a daughter and my due date was suppose to be March 17, 2008 but she came early:) I hope that the name Nahla does not become so popular that now everyone names their baby this name eventhough it has a beautiful meaning.

I named my baby after a disney princess and it was not Jasmine. That is the thing about having your very own baby, you get to name your baby whatever you want to name your baby. Let me restate what I stated already, when you have a baby you get to name your baby whatever you want to name your baby. If one of my relatives had approached me and said to me Leelee if you let me name your baby she won't have to want for anything in her lifetime I would have let that relative name my baby. If you named your own baby you did it because that is the name that stuck with you and that is all that really matters so to be hypercritical of any parents for naming the child that they will love and support makes the criticizer appear stupid, just plain stupid.

I really dont like the name that halle picked for her daughter and it's not because its arabic or anything of that matter, I just thought that with someone of her background maybe could have came up with something better than that. Congrats to both parents! Having a child at 41 is a blessing. 41 does not make her death sucking on a life saver. There are many parents in their 20's that make crap for parents. Britney is a perfect example. As far as the name, it means something to them- so move on.
