Idol Recap: Beatlemania, Take Two!

Season four contestant Mikalah Gordon recaps the March 18 episode for Us

Three years ago I was on that stage. I also would be going home this week, but enough about that. Hi, my name is Mikalah Gordon and I am an American Idol addict. It's OK for you to admit it too, we’re in this together.

Starting things on the second round of Beatles' performances of was Amanda Overmyer. I really respect Amanda: She’s unique and isn’t afraid of showing everyone what she’s all about. Her version of “Back in the USSR” was perfect. She has a great stage presence and I would totally buy a ticket to her show.

Little Miss Country, Kristy Lee Cook finally toned down her shtick; she needed to do that. Though Cook improved a lot from last week (which is a very good thing!) she still isn’t up to par with the rest of the contestants with a ho-hum “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away.” I think this might be last call for KLC.

David Archuleta, or “The Chosen One” (as Simon Cowell seems to think) got back into the swing of things. Last week was not a good week for him (how could he forget lyrics to the Beatles?), but “The Long and Winding Road” brought him back. I have a gut feeling that David A. is the winner this year. He has been the shoo-in from the beginning and once you believe the hype, you make it real, kids!

“A Day in the Life” was a good song choice for Michael Johns. I thought he did really well with this, a few bad notes but nothing major. But it is time to step up the game, sweetie.

Oh Brooke White, how the world adores you. You are awkward and shy and yet we can’t get enough. This week was not nearly as good as last week’s “Let It Be,” but she still did “Here Comes The Sun” justice. It seems like it’s effortless for her to get up there and sing every week and I admire that. On a more personal note, I still want to see Simon bring her to the dark side.

The dark horse of the season in my opinion is David Cook. He was hiding in the shadows for a while then the past three weeks he has been on top of his game. His version of “Day Tripper” was great — no matter what Simon said!

Carly Smithson is the professional of the season. Her voice is amazing and she knows how to use it — she pushed those pipes on an impressive version of “Blackbird.” But we shouldn’t expect anything less from her since she has already had a record deal. But, she still deserves as much kudos available because every week she delivers and performs with her all. (I want an Irish accent, fyi.)

Jason Castro really is a heart throb in the making. Don’t deny that you agree. His take on “Michelle,” though not the best, still was great. He will be a top 4 contestant, mark my words.

“Yesterday” gave Syesha Mercado a great comeback, but I’m not sure if it was enough. I like her and she is a great singer, but she hasn’t had the best performances in the past. I hope her fans vote tonight!

Chikezie took a great risk going on the stage and playing the harmonica, an instrument he didn’t know until this week, in the middle of “I’ve Just Seen Her Face.” Not as good as last week, but not bad. He’ll make it to the top 10.

Ramiele Malubay, belting “I Should Have Known Better” did a much better job than last weeks boring performance. She still needs to kick it up a notch. Her song choices are nothing to be desired. That is what makes you or breaks you.

I’m glad The Beatles mania is over. The Beatles are legends and no one can do their music like them, but two weeks is enough. The contestants deserve major props for even trying to do the songs justice. Top 10, here we come!

I'm glad The Beatles are over with as well! I thought Carly was the best of this week and last week as well. She doesn't get enough recognition because of the record deal in the past. Hopefully it will be a thing of the past and she will continue to impress everyone!
