Sarah Jessica Parker’s Wedding Day Regret

Sarah Jessica Parker admits that she made her greatest fashion faux pas – not on the red carpet, but while walking down the aisle.
 
“I wore black on my wedding day, and I really regret that,” Parker says in the October issue of Marie Claire. “I was too embarrassed to get married in white, and both Matthew [Broderick, her husband of nine years] and I were reluctant to have people pay so much attention to us. Which is ridiculous, because that’s when you can relish the attention, when it’s natural. We treated it like it was a big party on a Monday night, and I regret it.”
 
The 41-year-old actress also confessed that she has difficulty balancing motherhood (she has a 3-year-old son, James Wilke) and being a good wife to Broderick. “I fall short of being good at both, not infrequently, but I assume it’s like golf: You can never master it, and you’re in competition with yourself,” she says. “With my son, it’s constantly learning, failing, triumphing, being befuddled and totally in love.”

I just got married this past May. I did not wear a white dress. I actually wore an ice blue dress. With my skin coloring it actually looked like a silver/white. Most people didn't even know until the reception. Everyone loved it! And just to accent the color, my bridesmaids wore an awesome turquoise color. I have gotten so many compliments on the photos.
I will never regret wearing the ice blue. The dress was so classy and beautiful but a little bit different because of the color. I would pick the same dress no matter what. It's the bride's decision and whatever makes her feel beautiful is what she should wear.

I wore a black hawaiian dress with flowers on my wedding day, with a custom made jacket (with a red lining) over it and my husband wore a matching shirt. We looked FABULOUS! And I don't think we are any less married because I didn't wear white!

JoJo...One statement for you is that the man you marry will be sooo sorry for marrying such a one-sided, shallow minded and superficial person as yourself.

Marriage is about Love...and Love has no colour, no 'perfect outfit', no rules or boundaries.

What couples and brides wear or do or have at their wedding should always reflect their own personality and choice, not caged by some social phenomenon i.e. the white wedding dress.

Jeez...to think you got so worked up too!

The modern western tradition of white wedding dresses was started by Queen Victoria, who wore it to show how much money she had (not many people could afford a white dress, because it would more easily get soiled, and couldn't be work as regularly for as long a period of time before it became too dingy to be worn in public).

It wasn't about virginity. It was about greed and vanity.

SHUT THE FREAKING HECK UP AND GET OVER YOURSELF. It's HER day, HER wedding, HER life. Not yours... HERS. So before you flip out and tell her how horrible it looks, think about it. It isn't your place to tell her what color she should be wearing. I doubt she's going to go hunt down all the girls wearing white and give them crap...

Ok. People I've been reading some of these and some of you people are very rude to make fun of the way people look. SJP's only human. Not everyone is perfect. I think she has a great fashion taste and can wear whatever she wants. She was nominated in 2000 as the best dresser. So looks don't always matter. And I'm sure no one on this website thing cares about the size of her noes. Some people are really messed up these days to be making fun of people. Sarah J is the sharpest dresser to be around for a long time - hip and young and stylish. Before I even watched the show in reruns people would tell me that my style reminded them of hers - the leggings, the jewelry and now that I have watched the show from beginning to end I consider that a compliment. Many times I have seen an outfit or a peice of her jewelry and I just drool - I am fortunate enough to be a jewelry designer myself so I can pretty much duplicate anything i see on tv or in mags

When I got married, we were wed by a JP in the clothes we had on when we called him, because it was his only available slot. I wore a yellow hot-pants outfit (big stuff at the time) and my husband (now ex) also wore the clothes he had on: brown slacks and a brown print shirt (before brown was the new black!). We lasted over 20 years and would still be together if not for stubborness on both of our sides. The point is, if I got re-married, I would do somthing similar to what my ex-mother-in-law did: a beautiful shade of ivory with still all the pomp and cirmcumstance we BOTH wanted. I just wish, especially when I read about these so very expensive weddings and what the bridezillas go through: it's about the MARRIAGE, ladies; your husbands will think you're the most beautiful woman in the world no matter what you wear on your "special day". It's his, too. Save your money for your home, your future kids' education, whatever. Concentrate on the day after, please. And the day after that...

And, what's up with the SJP bashing? If she reads these blogs, the least of her concerns will be what she wore on her wedding day. Sad.

ya know, i'm sitting here reading all these posts and thinking, who are we to judge what anyone else chooses to wear on their day. maybe it isn't something you might consider to be "in fashion" but for them it felt right. When my husband and i got married ( my second marriage) we chose to be DIFFERENT! he wore a leapord print suit with a blue sequin shirt and i wore the same blue sequin dress with chains for straps. We have been married now for almost 8 years and not a day has passed where i regret what we wore. the reason: I love my husband and wouldn't care if i was naked when we said our vows because what you are wearing is so minor to what you are saying.

For those of you naive people, here is a bit of history for you:
Queen Victoria was the first bride to wear white to her wedding to Prince Albert. She wanted to be "different". It had NOTHING to do with being a virgin. So for the poster at 7:16 who was ranting about virgins only wearing white, YOU ARE SO WRONG. A bride can wear whatever color she wants, and it shows nothing in regards to her sexual status.

As a soon-to-be bride, I never really understood why people obsess over having a white dress for their wedding. The first dress I picked out when I was looking at dresses was a pale pink 2-piece Maggie Sottero gown. My mom & mother-in-law fell in love with it! I later found the same dress at a store in diamond white and I still haven't decided what color I want for sure. I am not a virgin, but don't think that matters when you pick your wedding dress. Women should wear what makes them feel their most beautiful, especially on their wedding day. But I do have a feeling if I wore pink, I may later regret it as Sarah has. So many decisions!

Jennifer Connelly wore a black dress as well at her wedding in Scotland. She has said that she and her husband (Paul Bettany) had intended on getting married in jeans, but the owner of the estate they rented had decorated everything so beautifully, they felt it was poor taste. So she wore a black Balenciaga dress she was going to use for a press tour, and her husband wore a suit. I saw her tell this on a talk show and thought "ew" but felt it was better than jeans. But in thinking on it now, it really doesn't matter....Sarah and Matthew have been married 10 years I think, and Jennifer and Paul for almost four years and they both seem to be happily married couples. As long as they stay together and try to keep their marriages healthy, who cares what they wear. Ultimately what you wear on your wedding day doesn't matter as long as you're faithful to your marriage vows.

With my colouring, I don't look great in white. On my wedding day, I wore a lovely pale pink dress. I even had a church wedding. People did kind of whisper, but oh well. I was happy, that is what matters. Not that anyone cares, but yes, I was a virgin.

I wore a off-white/ivory colour, i didnt feel right wearing a bright white dress, as my now husband and i had a daughter 8 months before and white makes me look so washed out, when i was 18 i thought i would wear a dusty rose colour dress when i got married, but i think a bride should wear any colour dress they want and should NEVER reget it. As long as they had fun on their day, who cares. I have seen wedding photos where the bride wore black and the bridemaids wore white it was very cool.

I agree with Meghan, a bride should wear whatever color she chooses. i think it a bit ridiculous to wear a white dress just because you are a virgin, and liken it to the waving of the bloody sheets on the wedding night that other religions practice. A wedding is something that's meant to bring two together as one, not announce to the world the state of the woman's hymen...
