Barbara Walters reveals that she turned down the first post-jail interview with Paris Hilton because her story is not “important” enough.
Walters, 77, tells the New York Post’s Cindy Adams that, though she had already prepared to interview Hilton, her conscience drove her to change her mind at the last minute.
"Look, I've done prison interviews before, but people like the Menendez Brothers were really important news stories," said the creator and cohost of The View. "This wasn't. And even though I'd already written my questions, when all that pay-for-play stuff happened, I suddenly felt this was not up to my standard. It...felt...sort of …tawdry.”
“The whole thing somehow was beneath me," she added.
Walters revealed that it was ABC, not she, who initially wanted the interview. “For them it was ratings. For me it was respect,” she says. “I'm fortunately at a point in my life where I can choose what I want, and this was solely my decision.”
The television news veteran also noted that ABC responded in a "classy" manner by not forcing her into the interview or threatening to give the exclusive away to another newscaster.
“They respected my decision and walked away,” she said. "Some agreed with my decision, some didn't. For me it was just a question of respect."

Barbara is a LIAR. She wanted that interview but it would look terrible for her if she didn't get it. Her career is on it's last leg and she had to depend on Rosie to boost her standing.... where did that get her. She is skating on thin ice and doesn't have the respect of her bosses anymore. It's soooo funny that interviewing Britney & Micheal Jackson is okay but Paris is "tawdry", such bull! I hope people aren't falling for this crap!

Barbara's claims of this being beneath her would hold a lot more weight had she not been all over The View quoting her phone call with Paris a couple of weeks ago. If she weren't exploiting that situation, she would have kept the details private. Something tells me she lost the interview, and she really wanted it.

Just surfing the net when I came across this. I think alot of people are losing the focus on what BW was stating. Everybody is in a hoopla about Paris Hilton getting out of jail. This is considered a top news story???!!! Why don't they interview every person who is released from jail for the same charges? JEEZ! What happened to the NEWS???!!! There are more important issues in this world such as our soldiers fighting a war on Iraq, the state of our economy, etc. I cant believe that people are obsessed about over-hyped female who was put in jail for driving a suspended license. What has Paris Hilton EVER contributed to society other than a sex tape and partying? NOTHING! and the fact is that she never will. Good for you Barbara, you did not sacrifice your work ethic for crap.

DUIs are not to be taken lightly. Believe me, I know. So if you do get one and your license is suspended, then you learn your lesson and accept your consequences of your actions. Paris thought she was above the law and that rules don’t apply to her. A DUI is a big deal and she wasn’t taking any of it seriously. And maybe driving under a suspended license isn’t as big of a deal as say killing someone… it still puts lives in danger and Paris should be held responsible for her actions.

BW deserves alot more respect then she is being given by the haters,she had every right to turn down this interview and should be given credit for not wanting to continue the charade as other publications have.That would be portraying hilton as an innocent who did no wrong but was caught drinking and driving (not just once) and snubbed her nose at the law and eventually had the book thrown at her.BW is right their are many more important issues to cover then those of a spoiled brat who has no morals or responsibilities.

Yea I bet Barbara was crushed because she didn't get to interview Paris first. She is losing great friends in the Hiltons, they were at her star of fame ceremony and she talks about Paris this way. She deserves to be on the Hilton family black list now. She would have been classier if she simply said nothing, or maybe I'll have her on the view at a later time.
