Mornings at Ashlee Simpson’s house sound surprisingly mellow. After all, the singer is mom of Bronx, 9, and Jagger, 2, and kids aren’t exactly known for cooperating in the a.m.

Simpson’s day begins when her alarm clock goes off at 7:30. “I’m so lucky because Jagger doesn’t wake me up, I wake her up,” the 7th Heaven alum told Us Weekly at the Petite ’n Pretty launch in L.A. on Saturday, July 21.

While Jagger dozes in bed with her dad, Evan Ross, Simpson jumps in the shower. But before she can reach for the shampoo, Jagger is standing in the bathroom asking if she can join. “That’s kinda how we start our day,” the star revealed to Us. “A nice little morning. And then Bronx, right now it’s summer, so he sleeps in.” (Simpson shares Bronx with her ex-husband, Pete Wentz.)

During the school year, Simpson and Jagger will pad downstairs to the kitchen and whip up pancakes, eggs or oatmeal. Ross, 29, is in charge of packing lunches — a turkey sandwich for Bronx and carrots with a side of ranch dressing for Jagger. Simpson admitted her toddler can be fussy when it comes to food: “Some days she will eat her lunch and some days not at all. Raisins.”

Fans will get to see the family in action when their E! docu-series Ashlee + Evan premieres on Sunday, September 9. The star’s decision to return to reality TV surprised her sister, Jessica Simpson. (Ashlee starred on MTV’s The Ashlee Simpson Show from 2004 to 2005.) “[I asked her], ‘Wait are you sure you want everything to be out there?’ Jessica told Entertainment Tonight earlier this month. “And she’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m really confident.’”

Ashlee admitted to Us on Saturday there was a moment where she was like, ‘OK. What am I doing?’ But that feeling has since passed. “Ultimately, I’m really excited about it and I’m really happy with the way it turned out. It feels good to put ourselves out there,” she said. “I decided when I was doing it, ‘Just open up and go for it. Don’t look back now, you’re in it.’”
