“I brought Birdie. She’s at an age now where I feel like she can really understand the idea of charity and giving back … and she wants to be involved,” the actress, 37, tells Us Weekly of her work with Baby2Baby, a nonprofit organization that provides low-income children, up to age 12, with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that every child deserves. “I love being involved with the organization because of all the amazing programs they run and the things they’re able to give all the underserved kids in Los Angeles. I’m getting my own kids ready for school and we’re going back-to-school shopping; it all really adds up, and for a lot of these kids, it can be disheartening to not have a new backpack. It makes me teary when I think about it. Birdie is incredibly lucky, and she is hopefully aware of it.”

The former Cougar Town star — who shares Birdie and younger daughter Cricket, 3, with screenwriter husband Marc Silverstein — also revealed details of Birdie’s upcoming birthday party (think snow cones and swimming).

“We’re having a pool party and snow cones from the organic snow cone lady at the farmers’ market!” the mom gushes. “I don’t know what I’m going to make for a cake. She’s just trying to establish herself as her own person. So maybe I’ll make a cake, but maybe I won’t. Oh, and then she asked all the kids coming to her birthday to bring backpacks and school supplies to donate to Baby2Baby instead of presents for her. I was very proud of her.”

And as for what the HBO star’s eldest daughter wants for her birthday?

“She wants a cat!” the happy mom admits. “It’s what she really wants. I think she’s gonna get it. We’ll rescue one, of course!”

Philipps also dished to Us about her new HBO sitcom, Vice Principals, which also stars Danny McBride and Walter Goggins. She plays Gale Liptrapp, the ex-wife of McBride’s character, Neal Gamby.

“We had the best time,” the Dawson’s Creek alum exclaims. “We filmed in South Carolina last year and we all loved it so much that a group of us, like, all the people with kids basically who were on the show, decided to go back this year for vacation together. The show is real nasty, but we aren’t in real life!”

Vice Principals airs on HBO Sundays at 10:30 p.m. ET. To get involved with Baby2Baby, visit baby2baby.org.
