Ellie Kemper Welcomes First Child

She’s a mom! Ellie Kemper and husband Michael Koman have welcomed their first child.

Kemper’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt costar Tituss Burgess was first to share the exciting news and the baby’s sex. “My Ellie had her baby. A son. But why am I emotional. He’s not mine. Also someone is gonna call her mom. I cannot wrap my head around it,” he wrote on Facebook on Monday, August 1.

Burgess, 36, recalled a conversation he had with Kemper, 36, on the first day of filming for the hit Netflix show, which now has two beloved seasons under its belt. “On the first day of filming I looked her square in the eyes and I said ‘bitch.. don’t get pregnant cause I don’t have time for it.’ She laughed and said trust I won’t… I feel such betrayal and happiness.”

The Bridesmaids star announced her pregnancy during a taping of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in April. She told the late-night host that she kept her pregnancy a secret while filming Unbreakable, only confiding in producer Tiny Fey.

“It didn’t really affect filming until the very end,” she said. “We had a table read and I saw that my character was supposed to be on a roller coaster, actually the Rip Ride Rockit. … It was still very early on, but I felt like a pregnant lady on a roller coaster is not ideal.”

The actress told Us Weekly that she and her husband were keeping the baby’s sex a surprise. “Michael and I don't know if that makes us the coolest parents or the most negligent parents," she said. "We're going to wait and find out."

While Kemper hasn't revealed her son's name yet, it won't be too out-of-the-box. "It will not have a wild name," she told Us in June, adding that it will be "fairly traditional."

Kemper tied the knot with her writer husband in New York — their home city — in July 2012.
