Halle Berry: How I Teach My Son Maceo, 5, About Acceptance

Leading by example! When it comes to teaching her 5-year-old son, Maceo, about acceptance, Halle Berry is letting the little one figure things out for himself.

“There’s nothing to explain,” the actress, 52, told Us Weekly exclusively at the premiere of the documentary film 5B at the L.A. Pride Festival and Parade in West Hollywood on Friday, June 7. “My job is to bring him down here, let him experience the love, the unity and discover on his own what this is all about. I think that’s what my job is. It’s not to mind-lead, it’s to lead an experience. [Maceo can] be who he is and make up his own mind and … develop his own sensibilities.”

She added: “My job is to expose him to all walks of life, and to all people.”

The Oscar winner documented her time at Pride on her Instagram Story on Sunday, June 9, including a sweet shot of her son waving a rainbow flag and wearing matching bracelets. “Little man enjoying some fun in the sun,” she wrote.

The X-Men star, who welcomed her son with her ex-husband Olivier Martinez in 2013, also shares daughter Nahla, 11, with her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry.

Both of the Ohio native’s children were born after her 40th birthday, and Berry told Us exclusively why she enjoyed becoming a mother later in life. “You’re so much more ready to be a parent after 40 than when you’re 20,” she said in May. “You know yourself better. You’ve done a lot of things for yourself, selfishly. When you wait later in life, you can really put your kids forward, I think, in a more meaningful way.”

She told other moms considering starting a family at an older age to “just do it.”
