Constance Wu Reveals How She Bonded With ‘Happy Hours’ Costar Katie Holmes Off Set (Exclusive)

Constance Wu is revealing how she managed to build a bond with her Happy Hours costar Katie Holmes.

“You know, we … both started our careers in television and we’re about the same age,” Wu, 44, exclusively told Us Weekly on May 20 while attending the American Ballet Theatre’s Spring Gala in New York City. “We both have kids, so there was just a lot to bond on.” (Wu shares two children with her partner, Ryan Kattner, while Homes, 47, shares daughter Siri with ex-husband Tom Cruise.)

Wu continued, “I just also really like her. She and I also read books – like, people don’t read books anymore but we read a lot. So, you know, we like to talk books, we like to talk music, we like to talk ballet. She’s a great person.”

Holmes is listed as the director and writer of the first installment of her most recent project, Happy Hours, also starring Joshua Jackson, Mary-Louise Parker, Joe Tippett, Jack Martin, Johnna Dias-Watson, Nathan Darrow, John McGinty and Donald Webber Jr.

The “character-driven dramedy” follows two people (Jackson and Holmes) as they navigate “their relationship within the challenges of careers and family responsibilities and the pursuit of love, despite life’s inevitable obstacles,” per Deadline.

“It’s a character-driven dramedy that explores the emotional journey of young loves who reconnect as adults, with the connective thread of shared joys, loss and hope,” the outlet added.

Production of the first installment began in summer 2025 in New York City. Since news of the project first broke, fans of the beloved series Dawson’s Creek have been clamoring for a chance to see Holmes and Jackson reunite onscreen.

“If this is a Dawson’s Creek reboot after 23 years I’m here for it! And let’s make it right this time and call it Pacey’s Creek,” one X user wrote after photos of Holmes and Jackson reuniting on set went viral.

“This is 20 years in the making… we finally get to see the adult story of Joey & Pacey,” another fan posted at the time.

As Wu continues to work alongside Homes and the rest of her costars, she’s being honest about what it’s actually like trying to find that elusive work-life balance as a working mom in Hollywood.

“I haven’t figured it out yet,” Wu candidly told Us on May 20. “One will inevitably get more time and attention [family or career], and if I have to choose which one’s getting more time and attention it’s going to be my kids and motherhood.”

She continued, “Which I tell myself actually makes my acting work better, because the richer your life experience is the deeper you can go into your characters. That’s what I tell myself.”
