Two months after Steve Martin‘s rep confirmed the 67-year-old had “welcomed a child” with wife Anne Stringfield, the Planes, Trains and Automobiles actor spoke about his little girl during an Apr. 23 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.
“It’s going great because I have a wonderful wife and mother,” Martin said of fatherhood. When the audience laughed, he added, “I’m paying her a compliment — everything is funny when I try to be serious!”
When Letterman asked the author and musician what his daughter’s name is, Martin demurred. “We’ve thought about the name quite a bit. Conquistador. What do you think? I didn’t want to go with one of those Hollywood weird names,” he quipped. “Conquistador is a statement.”
During his interview, Martin also put a baby monitor on Letterman’s desk. “The baby’s back at the hotel,” he explained, “and I’m a responsible dad.”
When various noises came through the speaker (ranging from a barking dog to a car alarm), Martin joked, “I think I left the window open!”
“Conquistador” is the first child for Martin and former New Yorker staffer Stringfield, who wed in 2007 in a surprise ceremony. The actor was previously wed to actress Victoria Tennant from 1986 to 1994.
Martin recently collaborated with singer Edie Brickell. Their new album, Love Has Come For You, was released Apr. 23.
