“We have a very gender neutral environment where my husband participates in a lot of tasks that were normally given to woman and vice versa,” the Guardians of the Galaxy star, 39, told Us Weekly on Thursday, June 14. “I get to do a lot of male things, which is, I don’t know, put the TV together, fix things that break. We’re so of a very gender fluid household. I think it’s important to raise boys in that environment and girls as well.”

Saldana and Perego’s kids made their public debut at her Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony in May. The couple, who wed in 2013, posed for photos with their 3-year-old twins Cy and Bowie and Zen, 18 months, in honor of the occasion. The Avengers: Infinity War actress, who has two sisters, told Us it is “ironic” that she is surrounded by men after growing up with women.

“I’m learning a lot about male biology. Boys are insane and just as crazy as females are,” Saldana explained. “They’re just as sensitive and just as kind but super hyper. It’s really hard to … You need a lot of physical energy to keep up with three boys. Four boys because my husband is the biggest one.”

“I have three boys … Blowouts always happen in the most inconvenient time. I’ve had all of those,” she continued. “I’ve checked every box. Airport, public places, in the car, sitting and talking to people that you barely know. All of a sudden you smell something and you look at yourself and you’re full of s—t. It’s just, you know, c’est la vie.”

Saldana, who gushed that her “proudest mommy moment” was each of her sons’ first words, also revealed what her boys have taught her.

“To be nice. As mommies sometimes we forget that,” she explained. “We’re caught raising and teaching and disciplining and cooking and cleaning and not enough time to play. I think that my kids always remind me when I’m being too boring. They go, ‘Mama, be nice, sit down and play with me.’ That’s what they’re teaching me.”

As for mommy advice, Saldana, who partnered with American Express to launch their Express Cash Magnet Card, added that she tells her boys to “Aways speak with love and respect.”
