Bristol Palin Calls Off Memorial Day Weekend Wedding to Fiance Dakota Meyer: Details

Bristol Palin
Bristol Palin has called off her May 23 wedding to fiancé Dakota Meyer, her mom, Sarah Palin, announced via Facebook

Bristol Palin will not be saying "I do" this Memorial Day Weekend. The Dancing With the Stars alum, 24, was planning to marry Marine Dakota Meyer on Saturday, May 23, but has called off her wedding, mom Sarah Palin revealed via Facebook on Monday, May 18.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate, 51, broke the news by sharing a picture of a quote from InstaGod Ministries: "Trust in God's timing. It's better to wait a while and have things fall into place than to rush and have things fall apart."

Below the photo, she included a note about her daughter's engagement, writing: "Bristol and Dakota couldn't be more thankful for the love and support of family and friends over the past months while preparing for their wedding. They have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held."

Instead, their families will meet to "celebrate life," Alaska’s ex-governor shared. There may not be a wedding, but there will be a party.

"Many friends and family still look forward to getting together that day in Kentucky anyway — and the Palins and Meyers are happily looking forward to still being at 'the old Kentucky home' on May 23 to celebrate life, in general!" she wrote. "Family members and close friends know they are welcome to share a great bar-b-que on the farm that day."

She added: "All involved, especially Dakota, Bristol and Tripp, and their parents and grandparents, thank supporters for the love they've expressed."

In recent weeks, however, the couple was plagued by rumors that Meyer had been hiding a previous marriage — which Bristol says is not the case.

In a note included with her mom's announcement about the wedding on May 18, the Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far author addressed reports about her fiance, writing, "Regarding salacious headlines in recent days about 'secret wives,' Dakota and I discussed our past relationships prior to our engagement. Dakota was legally divorced years ago, as any good reporter could and should have disclosed to readers."

She went on to say that the false stories "should be disregarded," adding, "We have faith that our privacy will be respected at this time by those with decency. Thank you!"

This was Bristol's second engagement. She previously accepted a proposal from Levi Johnston, dad to her son Tripp, 6. They split in 2009, reunited in 2010, and then split again just a few weeks later. He’s now married to Sunny Oglesby, with whom he has two children.
