All’s fair in love and Hollywood? Charlize Theron couldn’t be more committed to fiancé Sean Penn, but like any other couple, they’ve had their ups and downs — most notably while working together on the upcoming film The Last Face.
The Mad Max: Fury Road actress, 39, opened up about her relationship with the actor, 54, in an interview for the June issue of Elle UK. And though she called him the “love of [her] life,” she also said they were occasionally “unfair” to each other during the movie, which Penn directed.
“Putting aside that he’s my partner, he’s the love of my life; for the first time, I felt that my work was really bleeding into my life and that made it hard,” Theron told the mag.
“There were moments where I was incredibly unfair to him,” she admitted. “And moments where I felt like…he was incredibly unfair to me. But it makes you realize that no matter how complicated it gets, the priority is the relationship.”
The South African beauty — whose exes include Craig Bierko and Stuart Townsend — has known Penn for two decades now, but their bond didn’t turn romantic until 2014. Prior to that, Penn was married to Robin Wright (from 1996 to 2010) and Madonna (from 1985 to 1989); he also famously dated Scarlett Johansson in 2011.
Last month, Theron told Esquire she was “shocked” when their friendship at last blossomed into a romance. “I think that for both of us there was never a moment where we thought that this — what we have today — would ever even be a possibility,” she said in the mag’s May cover story. “Evereverever.”
Now that she’s living it, though, she couldn’t be happier. “I’m a very, very, very lucky girl,” she told Esquire. “Very lucky. He’s hot.”
