Standing up for herself. Chelsea Handler‘s decision to open up about having two abortions when she was just 16 years old has had a mixed reaction online — but the outspoken host isn’t apologizing.
Taking to Twitter to address some of the comments that had been written about the essay she penned for Playboy magazine’s “Freedom” issue, Handler, 41, denied suggestions she was showing off about the experience, insisting this was all about openness and honesty.
“When I agreed to write an article on a woman’s right to choose, I certainly wasn’t bragging,” the comedienne wrote on Tuesday, June 28. “I chose to tell the truth. #shouldbemoreofit,” she added.

As Us Weekly reported previously, Handler’s essay revealed that she has no regrets about terminating two pregnancies at such a young age.
“My parents acted like parents for one of the very first times in my life and took me to Planned Parenthood,” the Netflix star wrote in her essay. “I felt parented, ironically, while I was getting an abortion. And when it was over, I was relieved in every possible way,” she added.
“I’m 41 now,” she went on. “I don’t ever look back and think, ‘God, I wish I’d had that baby.’”
While Handler is aware that not everyone in America will agree with her stance, the point she wants to make is that the right to chose is an important one.
“It’s okay if you think it’s not right for women to have abortions — but it’s not your problem, because we decide,” she continued. “We have 7.3 billion people on this planet. Anybody who carefully decides not to become a parent — let alone a bad parent, which is what I would have become — should be applauded for making a smart and sustainable decision. I’d love for somebody to try to tell me what to do with my body. I dare them.”
Even after her message to critics, Handler continued to receive some negative reaction. But true to form, she didn’t shy away from addressing some of it.
“It’s really messed up that this woman has so many admirers,” blasted one Twitter user.
“@CJ_sports_twit maybe people appreciate a little honesty,” she responded.
Not all of the reactions were negative. Many felt her decision to speak out was courageous.
“I love chelsea handler; she isn’t liked for being honest. Honest bites but who doesn’t learn from a scar?” wrote one admirer.
that’s right baby. It’s not a popularity contest. It’s an honesty contest.
