“At the last debate, I was waiting for you to talk,” the Tonight Show host, 40, told the New Jersey Governor.

“Me too!” Christie, 52, replied with a chuckle. “There was one point I went 20 questions in a row without being asked a question, and that’s hard. I’m standing up there next to Marco Rubio, and we’re looking at each other going, ‘Are we still here? Are we still on? Are our mics working?'”

Christie told Fallon that he wanted to be more respectful of his opponents and their airtime — but threatened that he wouldn’t be so nice if ignored in the next GOP debate. “We may be changing tactics. If I get to like 15 questions in a row (count ’em at home!) if I get to 15 in a row [without being asked], you’re going to go, ‘Uh oh, he’s going to go nuclear now.'”

During his late-night stop on Monday, the Garden State native also opened up to Fallon about his polarizing opponent Trump, and the real estate mogul’s rapid ascent to success. “Oh no, I completely expected that, didn’t you?” Christie said, somewhat sarcastically. “Everything he does is fabulous, spectacular, wonderful, amazing!”

Trump, 69, is currently leading the polls among Republican contenders, and Fallon noted that Christie would be the one “yelling and stuff” as opposed to his opponent.

“Life is a strange, strange ride, Jimmy. We’ll just keep riding it,” the dad of four replied. “Fact is, it doesn’t really matter… We’re five and a half months before anybody votes. It’s a long way away, and there’s a lot of work to do. That’s what campaigns are about… I’m not worried about anyone, Donald or anyone. I gotta worry about me.”
