Corey Feldman Apologizes for Dropping the American Flag During ‘Today’ Performance

He didn’t mean it. Corey Feldman issued a statement to Us Weekly apologizing for dropping the American flag during his Thursday, October 13, performance on the Today show.

As viewers witnessed on Thursday morning, the former child star, 45, belted out his new tune “Take a Stand” alongside his angel costume–clad backup singers. During the energetic set, Feldman waved an American flag but let it fall to the ground at the end after saying, “We love you, America.”

“We were excited and grateful to be asked to return to the Today show, but there wasn’t much time to prepare. We scrambled to find an American flag to use as a patriotic symbol at the last minute and with no rehearsal,” the Goonies actor tells Us. “Once I was on stage, my brain reverted to my choreography, which was to throw my hands up in the air with a peace sign. As a dancer, my instinct is to drop anything in my hands.”

He continues: “In that live moment, it came off as wrong, and for that I’m deeply sorry. It was the exact opposite of my intention.”

Prior to taking the stage, Feldman told Today’s Tamron Hall that “Take a Stand” was written in tribute to the U.S. “I’m not letting the bullies get to us. … This song is for America,” he explained.

This isn’t the first time Feldman has sparked controversy on Today. Last month he faced brutal online criticism after a bizarre performance of his single “Go 4 It.”

Not long after, Feldman spoke to Us about the breakdown he suffered in the aftermath.

“I don’t care if you’re hiding behind a computer or a keyboard — it’s not an excuse. It’s not acceptable,” he said. “The somebody that you’re talking about is a real person with real feelings and real emotions. And I’ll tell you what, if I hadn’t been through this one thousand times, I might’ve taken my life over it. And then how would everybody feel?”
