He did, after all, want to grow old with her. Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler have been friends for decades, and once again reunite onscreen in the comedy Blended. So, naturally, the twosome were finally asked once and for all if they ever dated or had sex in real life during an appearance on Chelsea Lately on Thursday, May 22.
"Have you guys ever dated? Have you ever hooked up or [had] penetration," host Chelsea Handler jokingly asked.
Barrymore, 39, replied: "Not even a little! Not even like, as we say in The Wedding Singer, 'Church tongue.' Nothing, really."
Sandler quipped: "One night I screamed, 'Please look at it!'" he said of his privates. "No, we always just hung out and had a good time. We always socialized, but we never, it's good."
Barrymore chimed in: "That's probably why we've been able to stick together all these years because there never was that awkward moment."
Blended marks the third rom-com the mom of two and Sandler, 47, have starred in together. They first costarred in 1998's The Wedding Singer as the lovable Robbie Hart and Julia Sullivan. Six years later, they teamed up again in 2004's 50 First Dates.
Although they never dated, they did reveal to Handler they were both single at the time of filming the Wedding Singer comedy smash. (The "church tongue" previously referenced, is when their characters did a practice church kiss before Barrymore's Julia walked down the aisle with fiance Glenn Guglia, played by Matthew Glave.)
"I respect Adam, I always have," Barrymore said during an interview with On Air with Ryan Seacrest on the same day as Lately. "We've always had this very platonic, wonderful love and appreciation for each other…and I appreciate what he does."
