El Chapo’s Mugshot Released After His Capture: See the Photos

El Chapo

El Chapo‘s mugshot has been released following his arrest on Friday, January 8. The Mexican drug lord (real name: Joaquin Guzman) was recaptured in Sinaloa, Mexico, six months after he escaped from the Altiplano maximum security prison.

Guzman’s new photos were released on Tuesday, January 12. In the side-by-side pics, he has a shaved head and wears a beige shirt.

Following Guzman’s capture, President Barack Obama applauded Mexican authorities. “First of all, I want to compliment the Mexican government,” the POTUS, 54, said during a Today show interview, which aired on Tuesday. “He is disabled and that affects … the Mexican government’s ability to really crack down on some of the terrible crimes that are committed by these narco traffickers.”

Mexican authorities were able to capture Guzman, 57, because of an interview he did with a Hollywood movie star — Sean Penn. The Gunman actor, 55, visited the notorious murderer last October, and scheduled an interview at a later date. (Penn told the Associated Press in an email on Monday that he’s “got nothin’ to hide.” Mexican actress Kate del Castillo introduced Guzman to Penn.)

As previously reported, Penn was blindfolded while traveling to Guzman’s hideout to keep the location a secret. Mexican officials, meanwhile, followed Penn, which led to Guzman’s capture. The Oscar winner’s bombshell interview was posted on Rolling Stone‘s website on Saturday, and the 17-minute video was shared on Tuesday. According to the magazine, Penn sent questions by a BBM device and Guzman responded on videotape.
