Former New York governor Eliot Spitzer has been accused of assault by a 25-year-old unidentified woman, who claims that the politician is her boyfriend and that he choked her on Saturday, February 13.

The alleged assault reportedly took place at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. So far, Spitzer, 56, has not been charged in the incident.

"The victim has indicated that the subject is Eliot Spitzer," the New York Police Department told CNN in a statement released Sunday. "Through an ongoing investigation, we are attempting to further establish the identity of the subject and the nature of the incident."

A spokeswoman for Spitzer told CNN, "There is no truth to the allegation.”

The woman was taken to the hospital with self-inflicted cuts to her wrists, and Spitzer was allegedly also there, wearing a hat to hide his face, a source told CNN. The woman reportedly told police she and Spitzer had gotten in a verbal dispute that turned physical.

Spitzer and his ex-wife, Silda Wall, divorced in 2014. He resigned as governor of New York in 2008 following his involvement in a prostitution scandal.
