Bitter after breakup? Elizabeth Olsen’s ex-fiance, Boyd Holbrook, gave a no-holds-barred interview to Man of the World, revealing new details about their split in his cover story released on Friday, Dec. 11.
Us Weekly broke the news in January that Holbrook, 34, and Olsen, 26, had called off their engagement long before Olsen was photographed that month without her ring. According to the Narcos actor, who was in a three-year relationship with the Avengers: Age of Ultron actress, the breakup was like a “divorce.”
“On the same day that my best friend died, I got a call from my girl to tell me it was over,” Holbrook told Man of the World in Issue No. 14. Though Holbrook didn’t mention Olsen by name, he was engaged to the actress when his best friend, photographer David Armstrong, passed away in October 2014 from liver cancer. He was 60.
“David was the first person in my life to encourage me,” said Holbrook, who was often photographed by the shutterbug. “He told me to do everything I wanted to do. No one had ever told me that before. He was a very important figure in my life. Important figure is not even close to what he was.”
The fallout of his death was devastating. “I was consumed with my own personal depression, my own personal scenario at the time,” Holbrook said. It took a motorcycle trip up and down the coast of Chile to make him snap out of it.
“What happened over the course of the journey was that I started noticing the different types of trees,” the star explained. “I started noticing beauty, the details.”
