It’s been a tough week for Elizabeth Vargas. First the 20/20 anchor, 51, announced that she checked herself into a rehabilitation center for the second time to seek treatment for alcohol addiction. Now Us Weekly has learned that the ABC reporter and her husband of 12 years, singer-songwriter Marc Cohn, have filed for divorce.
A source familiar with the situation tells Us, “The two are indeed in proceedings, but the divorce is not yet final.”
Cohn and Vargas married in 2002, and share sons Zachary, 11, and Samuel, 8.
It was the “Walking in Memphis” singer-songwriter, 55, who originally requested his wife seek treatment last fall. Following her first stint in rehab, Vargas reflected on Cohn’s wakeup call to her in a Good Morning America interview in January.
"'You have a problem. You're an alcoholic,'" she recalled him saying. "It made me really angry, really angry. But he was right."
After announcing she had decided to return to a treatment center over the weekend, the award-winning journalist apologized to her family.
"I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down, and for that I am ashamed and sorry," Vargas said in her weekend statement. "I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time."
