Former MLB pitcher Daniel Serafini and his mistress, Samantha Scott, exchanged love letters while in jail, according to new testimony.
While testifying against Serafini in court, Scott read some of the notes her love interest sent after he was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder for the shooting of his wife’s parents.
“I love you, and I think about you so much of every day,” Scott said when reading Serafini’s alleged letters via People. “As crazy as it sounds, I wish we had more court days just so I could see your face. I wish I could tell you not to be so scared, but I understand that you are. There’s really nothing to be scared of. And it will be over soon.”
In one letter, Serafini shared his plans for the day he is able to be released from jail and reunite with Scott.
“First plan is to hit the airport parking lot,” Serafini allegedly wrote.
Scott testified that the sentence was a reference to a time when the pair had sex in a parking lot at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
In the letter, Serafini also claimed he was writing a book to help pay for Scott’s attorney fees.
“I’m also hiring you to help me finish it,” Serafini allegedly wrote. “So we need to take a couple of road trips to get some facts straight. Plus photos of certain places. I’m pretty sure there will be some stops along the highway on the way and back.”
According to Scott, Serafini allegedly signed the note, “We will be free soon. I love you and always will. The Wolf.”
Scott said she was unsure what Serafini meant when he described himself as “The Wolf.”
Scott’s testimony was part of a deal she made with prosecutors that allowed her to enter a guilty plea to the lesser accessory charge, People reported.
In 2021, police responded to a home in Tahoe City, California, where they found Serafini’s father-in-law, Gary Spohr, dead and Serafini’s mother-in-law, Wendy Wood, gravely injured from gunshot wounds.
During the investigation, detectives determined that Serafini was responsible for the crimes. He was booked into the Auburn Jail in October 2023.
On July 14, a Placer County jury found Serafini guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder of his in-laws. The jury also found the defendant guilty of first-degree burglary. Sentencing is expected to be held on Monday, August 18.
One month later, the victims’ daughter, Adrienne Spohr, spoke out in an interview with People.
She confirmed her mom — who suffered brain damage as a result of the shooting — died by suicide at an assisted-living facility in 2023.
“The heartbreak of losing my dad — and knowing who was responsible [for his death] — became too much,” Adrienne said. “She said it felt like she had lost her right arm.”
As she waits for sentencing, Adrienne hopes the public remembers her mom and dad as two “strong” individuals who left the world too soon.
“My parents were forces of nature. They were strong, adventurous, generous and they loved deeply,” she said. “That’s how I want people to remember them — not as victims but as the incredible people they were.”
