Fred Thompson, Law & Order Actor and Former Senator, Dies At the Age of 73

Law & Order alum and former senator Fred D. Thompson died at his home on Sunday, Nov. 1, according to The New York Times. The actor, senator, and 2008 Republican presidential candidate was 73.

According to a statement issued by his family, he died of lymphoma.

“Fred was the same man on the floor of the Senate, the movie studio or the town square of Lawrenceburg, his home,” his family said in the statement.

Thompson served in the Senate, representing Tennessee, for nine years from 1994 to 2003. He also ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, eventually withdrawing from the race.

He also memorably starred on NBC’s Law & Order, playing Arthur Branch, a Manhattan district attorney. The character appeared in the franchise’s various spin-offs, including Special Victims Unit and Criminal Intent.

Thompson is survived by four children.
